R50/53 Oil Filter $ - WTF?
Just ordered a 4 pack of OEM filters from Way Motor Works and a Fumoto valve with a short nipple and safety clip, for piece of mind. Good thread for a mini noob like myself to gain some knowledge. Thanks guys
For the last few years, I've been using Beck-Arnley 041-0811 filters because they were actually Mahle OX175D. If you shopped the web or the big auto stores, you could find a great deal....Until recently. They've apparently gone the way of so many aftermarket suppliers and re-packagers by using the least expensive source they can find...."Made in China"....No thanks!
Well this is what I found when I took the cap off... Will this cause the timing chain tensioner to not work?
The plunger was laying sideways in the bottom. The plunger only had one of the three prongs on it that hold it into the hole.
Just some back story on this post... I just got this Mini from a friend, he had the oil changed and a day later he got the death noise. I changed the tensioner out with a new one and started it up, it was still making the noise, so I turned it off. Now here I am looking for some help.
Thank you

Is that metal shavings in the cap?
The rattle could be the supercharger.
I hope you got a smokin' deal from your friend.

It looks like the drain back plunger fell out. I think that necessitates replacing the oil filter housing. The rest of it may be in the motor somewhere. Likely ground to bits by now.

You don't think that it could be the timing chain?
It suppose it could be a timing chain but I'm not there to listen to it running. I think historically the supercharger will go about this time or a belt tensioner. Is it louder to the passenger side or towards the middle to drivers side?
If you have a long screw driver, you can use it like a stethoscope by placing the metal tip on a spot and resting your ear to the end of the handle.
