R50/53 Crunch!
We just got rear ended by a Peugot 106 driver who was looking at road signs and not at the road
Fortunately all drivers and passengers involved weren't injured. Nellie seems to have only sustained a cracked rear bumper (fender) from where it obviously crumpled and popped back out and a small dent in the chrome insert. The Peugot came off worse, with the front bumper hanging off and water pouring out of a burst radiator.
Now we've got to get the damage assessed by our insurance company etc. so Nellie will be off the road for a few days (although in theory, our insurance company will give us a loaner). How much does it normally cost to get the rear bumper replaced on a Cooper ?

Ouch, sorry to hear about that. I guess you should thank your lucky stars you weren't rear ended by some Ford Excursion or Chevy Suburban.

I was nearly rear ended the other day it was slow moving traffic and I had stopped. I looked in my rrear view to see if the car behind be had stoped just in time to see the driver looking up from whatever she was doing with a surprised look on her face. Fourtunatly she had good breaks and she must have stomped on them as I seem to recall waching her get thrown forwards then back into her seat. She was behind be for a while and she kept her eyes forwards. I guess she got a dose of adrenalin just like I did!
Don't you just want to slap people around who do that? Pay attention... geesh... and get off my bumper... I had someone INCHES away from the back of my MINI at the drive-thru at my bank... And add to that I was going up a slight slope onto a concrete platform where the machines were... grrrrr... I ended up stalling it the first time i tried to go, and then just put the darn thing in reverse to turn on the light to scare them off.... grrrrr...

Nothing makes me more mad than that! It's like "hello, do you think you're getting to your destination faster because you are 1 foot closer to my bumper?!"
I need to install some kind of steel, jagged edge rear bumber that sticks out like 2 feet and has a sign that reads "Go ahead tailgate me!"

its not the cost of getting a bumper replaced, its the length of time to get the damn bumper...had the front bumper banged at a parking lot and it has been in the shop now 2 weeks, going on 3 now...guess the bumper is coming from Britain on the same boat more minis are.....BMW really needs to get their service for minis squared away, pretty dismal service I've had from the start...
>>I have noticed people tailgate me way more in the MINI.
Me too! I thought I was just imagining it was happening more when I was in the MINI. Knowing my car can stop faster than just about any other car on the road (love those negative G-forces) makes me feel rather uncomfortable when I'm being followed too closely.
Our society is becoming more aggressive, and it's reflected in our driving habits. Here in the Chicago area thay have developed aggressive driving into an art form.

When people tailgate me I just just drive even slower to **** 'em off
Besides I've got a good excuse. The brakes on the MINI are so good the tailgaters will likely rear end me if I have to stop suddenly. So I need the extra space in front of me to judge my braking better.
I really wish that missing toggle switch could control an oil slick device

Naa.. I drop it down a gear and get some space... after you fly away, most people seem to stay back there... of course, that doesn't fix the idiots who speed up to get in front of you to slow down... grrrr...

Well, Nellie's all fixed up by our local BMW garage with a new rear bumper (and both gearbox recalls done at the same time) and looking good as ever  Absolutely no other damage than the bumper, which did its job perfectly
We've also come up with a new trick to dump tailgaters. Switch on the rear foglights. It looks like you're braking really hard and they're so bright they've got to back off or risk permanent retinal damage  Had to do it twice tonight driving back home on the motorway when golf drivers (different ones!) got right up behind us. Was fun watching how fast they disappeared in the rear view as they slammed their brakes on

>>When you have someone tailgating you, put your lights on while speeding away. They'll think you're slowing down, only to find you gone.
I love that move! Especially when some nimrod in a tank is so close, he is practically in your back seat......and you're in the slow lane! The look on their face is priceless when they see the red brake lights light up.

P.S. Kids, make sure nobody is on your victim's tooshy when performing this move.......and don't talk to strangers.

Probably to check out what the hell your car is!!!
Don't be surprised if a lot of people think you have a vintage automobile. With only 20,000 supposedly going to be sold in the U.S. each year, I think the "what the #$%* kind of car is that?" effect will go on for a while with the Mini.

btw. with labour costs etc. the Mini rear bumper cost us under £250. Not bad at all!

Yeah - the MINI's reverse lights are very low, near the bumper. They are so low that no large vehicle anywhere near your MINI would be able to see them. So be careful backing up in parking lots b/c if a big SUV across from you is backing up, they'll never see you or your lights in their rear!

>>Is it just me or does anyone else have a problem with Lexus tailgaters? It seems that whenever I have a car sniffing my exhaust pipe it turns out to be a Lexus. Anyone else???
Nope, not just you. They seem to assume that everyone else will get out of the way. Still, they won't be around long, Alan Partridge drives one now  (UK joke

Out here in the great Northwest here we apply abrupt, decisive and convincing corrective action via the Lousiville Slugger Manual Automobile Body Panel Customization Equipment. Works every time, but ya gotta be quick. . . !

I used to get tailgated like crazy... well, still do, but nowhere as much since I modified my taillights to have the double brakelight. You'd think they wouldn't tailgate when you drive at an average of 7 mph over the limit at all times... guess they just want a peice of tailpipe. Ehe.

Excuse my ignorance, Zwilnik. The fact you were hit by a Peugot (Not too many of those in the USA) should have been a dead giveaway that you're on "the otherside of the pond." Doh!

I get tailgated more in the MINI, too.....
What works for me is if there is someone following too close, I put on my hazards. 9 times out of 10 people will back off.
