but the Cooper S posts a 7 bhp increase in performance taking its maximum output to 170 bhp at 6,000 rpm. Top speed is increased by 3 mph to 138 mph and the all-important 0-62 mph is achieved in just 7.2 seconds, a reduction of 0.2 seconds. Also, torque has been increased by 10 Nm, peaking at 220 Nm at 4,000 rpm.

A new five-speed ‘Getrag’ gearbox with modified gear ratios will feature in all MINI One and MINI Cooper and MINI Cooper S models.

anyone comment?

Won't the gas mileage drop with a 5 speed in the MCS? I thought the 6 speed made up a little better gas mileage.

I am assuming modified gear ratios means that they will all be geared differently.

The current 6-speed Getrag does not have an overdrive top gear ratio. If MINI deciees to take away one gear and fit a 5-speed in the MCS, my guess is that the new gearbox will have a top overdrive gear ratio. This apparently has 2 benefits...better fuel economy and cheaper to manufacture.

Having said this, I still like my 6-speed better.

Also the comments about the HP increase in the MCS to 170HP I taught only applied to the MCS Cabrio model, not the regualr hardtop.

I wonder where the extra 7 hp come from? I hope its something as simple as modified exaust/intake as opposed to headwork, etc.. That way us 2004 and below guys can possible upgrade 7hp from factory bits. Especially with all the denied warranty work. ...

Lots of neat tweaks, with no major changes.

Still don't care for the phaser headlights too much though...

Yeah, I am not too crazy about the new headlights. However I would like to see a pic of how the new halogen units will look like.

But worse than that, the placement of the rear fog light in the center of the rear bumper is ugly.

I happen to like the new lights, but I certainly will not be waiting for a 2005 if the MCS goes from a 6-speed to a 5-speed.

Ahhh! so that means that we 2002-2004 MCS owners could get an ECU reflash at the dealer, no?

I think the article is incorrect. I spoke at length with some people at the plant about upcoming 2005 changes and after talking about everything I'm sure they would have mentioned something as big as the MCS going to a 5-speed. It would be totally out of character for MINI or BMW do to something like that.

Gabe,
Do you think the 170hp is across the line on the S or just the Cabrio?

it's across the line. Torque is also slightly increased on the Cooper.

However the whole 5-speed thing has got me thinking... I may have spoke too soon about the 6 speed still being available. I'd like to change my official answer to "I'm not sure".

IT says the 05s are getting an even larger rearview mirror. Thats crazy, its hard enough to see around the mirror as it is right now. The rearview mirror as it is right now seems almost dangerous, it limits the forward viewing considerably compared to other cars I've driven.

Looking on the MINI international site at the Cabrio model comparison it shows the S having a six speed not a five.

I believe that the new Getag 5 speed is only for the MC and One

Adjust your seat height to a lower setting.

'05 MCS
Good: New color, smooth chrome trim on the front grill, 3 piece dash, storage cubby below e-brake, extra hp/torque, new trim options, new wheel options

Bad: New headlight cluster, new taillights/rear fog setup, 5speed (if true), likely price increase.

I'm sure the headlights look cool when on with the "halo" effect but when they're off it really changes the look of the car, and not in a good way. Maybe it'll be different when I see it in person. For now, glad I didn't wait. I looooovvvvvve my '04 MCS.

Of course, the new headlights in the pick are the xenons. The regular headlights look very nice on the '05. Clear glass lenses look very clean and fresh. As far as the price increase it will be about 2.5% or about $500 on the Cooper S.
