R50/53 25,000+ miles? How reliable has your MINI been?
Now @ 39k. Next service approximately 1000 miles away.
Problems to be addressed include:
- Variety of rattles (sunroof, shifter in 3rd, door, IP)
- Odd non-rattle noises (automatic AC @ start, "percolating" sound when gas pedal lifted in 2nd)
- Salt film on inside moveable windows after each car wash in Spring / Summer
- Both front turn signals cracked (SE Michigan gravel haulers... )
- Lots and lots of stone chips in bonnet and windshield (same as above... )
Has anyone considered extending the service warranty from 36k to 48k? Given the cost of a Mini-OEM oil change and service, does this make sense?

MyFirst,
When I purchased Wanda, I bought the extended maintenance warranty, figuring that by the time she reaches 48K, she'll most likely need at least a brake job, and the extra $$$ for the extension was less than the brake job would be, so I went for it. She is about to pass 30K on the clock on my current cross-country roadtrip and is running better than ever. Of course, her newish K&N CAI Typhoon Kit hasn't hurt....LOL!

32,500 miles on my Dec 02 build 03 MCS that I have driven since January of 03.
Just completed 1st Inspection at 30,000 miles.
Repairs under warranty:
New speedo instrument cluster to replace defective temp indicator.
Replaced driver side window winder motor & controller (failed to operate).
Replaced coolant tank on my own with aluminum tank.
Repainted interior trim on my own after it started peeling off.
Replaced faulty throwout bearing on transmission/clutch.
Replaced PCV hose.
Replaced steering column (bearings failed), so I'm on my second steering columns and the clacking noises have come back, and it appears that the seconds steering column bearings are also beginning to fail.
Still outstanding work: have ordered another new window motor controller, since the window dip function needs to be reset about 2-3 times per week, sometimes even twice a day.
On my current cross-country drive my passenger side xenon headlight started acting up: at times, it will not light up even when trying 5 times in a row. At other times, it will work ok. Took it to a dealer in AZ on the fly, and they said a new light-control computer is needed (not sure if that is the BC1 computer), and so I will have that ordered and replaced when I get back. It is very annoying now to have to pull over every time I have to turn on the lights, and check to see if the passenger side one is on or not!
Have had mild versions of stumble and yo-yo. At Insp 1 upgraded to ECU software version 36, which took care of the stumble and improved the yo-yo, but there is still some yo-yo, but never to the extent that it really bothered me.
None of these issues have kept me from driving the car, and it's the most fun car I have ever driven. On the other hand, the car has had more than 12 dealer visits now (almost one per month on average), and spent over 30 days at the dealer.
It is the most fun car I have ever driven, but also the car with the worst quality I have ever owned or driven, and that by a huge margin. I love the car, and I really hope MINI can get their quality act together. I am going to sell this one and get an 05, but may wait to January so I can get an LSD.

Hmmm! Let's see. I just passed 25,000 miles and it has been bought back by BMW. So probably not so good. But I had a lemon. Most of the problem has been major engine problems. The rest of the car has been good, except two windshields and a bad amp on my Harmon Kardon. I personally think I had a lemon, and except for the engine problem, it has held up quite well. So much fun, that I had to go and buy another one.
36000 miles plus
I am just over 36,000 miles and I have the following dealer visit history. I am the second owner btw..
1. windshield replacement
2. o2 sensor
3. window regulator
4. fuel line sending unit
5. a/c compressor
6. rear shock puncture (road hazard) Not a mechanical fault, but due to crappy california interstates
I thought these types of things only happen after the car is out of warranty

With my '02 MCS purchased new in October of '02 I had 36,700 smiles with 100% mechanical relibility.
Granted, there were some warranty issues, but they never interfered with my travels. Everything was always handled during regular scheduled maintenance appointments unless parts had to be ordered.

about 29K, 03 MC
-coolant turned brown, they refilled it and it's been fine since
-was overheating when idling, turned out the p/s fan was causing fuse to blow and kill the auxiliary fan. they fixed the p/s fan and it's been fine since
-dash rattle started about a year ago. it happens when it's hot so i turn on the a/c through the defroster and that makes it stop.
the service has been great. it's a fantastic car. i love it so much i bought another one (really!)

No biggies
I have a 2003 (Nov 2002 build) MC with 58,000 miles. I am now out of warranty. Before the warranty expired the following were completed by the dealer:
Fix driver door that would not open from the outside (re-attached cable)
Fix cigarette lighter that stopped working with phone charger
All scheduled and covered oil changes and maintainence
replaced front brakes
Replaced vacuum assist booster for brakes
Reset front passenger seat
Also completed (but not a dealer)
1 OEM windshield replacement (cracked by huge rock after 3 months)
1 PPG windshield (no problems so far)
Also, I am still driving on my original Goodyear Eagle Runflats

My brakes break from time to time.. . . other than that, my MINI has been basically perfect and has never left me by the side of the road for a drivetrain issue. .. . 48k
As of today 88,400 miles. Worst problem as of yet has been the coolant bottle leaking. Had it replaced under warenty the first time, but the second time I bought a Forge one.
Should be well over 100k by amvivIII

And still going strong. I'm gonna need a a clutch soon. Not too snappy anymore. Everything that's broken, I broke! (maybe not a gas tank sender, but that's just started up)....

37K on a 9/02 production 03 MCS.
No major problems.
recall for defective suspension bolt.
replacement coolant header tank
replaced/upgraded ps fan / coolant fan circuit
minor trim piece replaced due to factory install error
crack in windshield (I live with it, as it hasn't spread)
Love the car as much now as when it was new.
Uncertain and nervous as to what the '07s will bring.

2003 MC CVT, May 16 '03 Build Date, June 6, 2003 purchase date at dealer.
38K miles so far... the following repairs:
Driver's side door lock actuator mechanism failed (RUW = Replaced Under Warranty)
Harmon Kardon amplifier stopped working, RUW
Dash rattles: fixed temporarily with silly rubber pieces placed between windshield and dash by dealer...rubber pieces have since slid out of place, rattles back in full force
Steering wheel leather bubbling and peeling: replaced steering wheel with same type that looks like it will also bubble in peel in time...RUW
Overheat situation this summer, car was towed to dealer...required a new power steering electric motor (the PS Fan was fine...it was the PS Motor that failed only...very odd...) RUW
I think that is it...I lost track...hope this car doesn't become a money pit after warranty is expired! Love it and hope to drive it for at least 100K miles but...we'll see...track record isn't too good for a 2 year old car with only 37K miles.
Rock on,

Oct 03 build, Cooper, 48,000.
3rd day of ownership, front whindshield moulding replacement.
Windshield replacement, next day after dealership breaks windshield.
All three service stops, oil changes, brake pads all around.
Window motors replaced.
Rattles in back hatch and dash fixed and have not returned.
Driver's side iwndow re-aligned.
Brakes are probably needing to be replaced again soon. I drive too fast, and stop too often!
No other problems to report. Still smile everytime i get in mine! And I would never ever want to own an automatic. Those poor souls seem to have all the bad cars!
