I went out to do a little external spring cleaning of Ollie and everything appeared completely normal -- gave him a pretty quick wash then went inside to get some chow. When I came back out a bit later to dry off the last water droplets (my microfiber towels have disappeared and it wasn't a major detailing, so I let him air dry) I notice on the passenger side door two vertical lines, each about 12" long, comprised of a series of horizontal scratches. Some are down to what appears to be primer, others down to metal. There is about 3" of unharmed paint between the two rows of scratches.

It's just horrible

I still can't figure out how it happened. I think I would have noticed it prior to or during the washing process, but I didn't. So I don't know if that means that someone sideswiped me while I was inside eating after I washed him... *sigh* I guess it doesn't really matter when it happened.

Oh Toasty,

Poor Ollie. It reminds me of the time the nun put about 6 scratches in the side of Louie while I was seeing the dentist. Unfortunately it costs about $400 to get the door repainted.

I've been pretty lucky so far w/ door dings. My wife's Honda Accord seems to suck up all the dings around our apartment complex. I was thinking someone should make a device that frys the offending cars electrical system if they hit your door, kinda like a giant capacitor or something. I think it would take care of the hand and nose prints I'm always finding too. Don't they have something overseas for this? I know in South Africa they have under door mounted flame throwers but that seems like overkill to me. Good luck w/ your paint job and I hope it all turns out okay.

I'm really sorry to hear about this, OmToast. For what it's worth, to repair the 1 1/4 down-to-the-metal scratch on my door will cost $500, including repainting the whole door. Although there were no witnesses (except the guy who did it, who claims he didn't remember doing the damage), I have a lot of circumstantial evidence, which I feel any reasonable person would accept, so we'll let the small claims court judge decide.

I just cannot believe how incredibly irresponsible, selfish, and insensitive other drivers can be.

Thanks for the all the well-wishes. There was absolutely no point to my initial post other than to vent and illicit the sympathies of Those Who Won't Look At Me As If I Have Six Heads. I generally overreact regarding boo-boos and my car, but this is just REALLY nasty.

There is no conceivable way that the perpetrator of this most heinous offense could have missed the thunking, grinding or squeaking associated with the damage he/she caused.

While I would never be so oblivious as to cause such damage to the property of another person, if I did, by chance, have some kind of brain fart and destroy someone's door, I would absolutely leave my insurance info as that is why I pay the premiums. So this required carelessness, disrespect and wonton disregard for one's own actions.

I'm unbelievably pissed.

When I last fought with door dings (subsequently fixed with paintless dent repair) I was quoted about $400 for a quarter panel/door repaint. Hopefully just the door will knock down the cost a bit.

Arg.
