R50/53 Battery replacement
Battery replacement
Just replaced my original factory battery (6+ years, 64,000 miles). I got a Bosch brand at Pep Boys. It fit right and has the little valve that sticks out to connect to a tube (not sure what that is, but it's on the old and new battery so I connected it). However, the metal strap that bolts on over the top (not the plastic cover) doesn't fit. the top of the new battery is somewhat smaller that the main body to almost allow the strap to fit, but the battery is still too wide by about a quarter of an inch and simply won't go on. Is this a common problem? Is there a way to deal with this or is it fine to go without the strap?
Thanks,
Mike Todd

The tube is to vent hydrogen gas that forms when a battery is recharged...normally it is not an issue, but when the battery is located INSIDE the car, it should be vented to the outside.
The factory tie-downs may/may-not fit various aftermarket batteries, but you should 100% ensure the battery is secure....even a small amount of movement can GREATLY shorten the batteries life...VIBRATION is a batteries biggest enemy.

In addition to vibration, please ensure that the battery is securely fastened. If involved in an accident, the battery can be a 30+lb. "missile" that can inflict serious injury or death. Please modify the strap to fit or fabricate one that does.
