R50/53 Valentine 1 question
I received my Valentine 1 radar detector today and now I got a question for any Valentine 1 owner.....When you turn it on, does it make any kind of sound or does any kind of power on light lite up?
I tried the unit out tonight but I'm not sure its working. The cigarette lighter works ok, but I drove around for an hour to see if I would get any kind of alert, but nothing. I know the cops don't run much radar at night but I at least thought I might pick up a blip from some source.
Now here's my question....I didn't see in the owners manual where there is any kind of light or sound to let you know the unit is on besides just turning on the control ****. But....if you get no light or beep to let you know your unit has power, what happens if your lighter blows a fuse? Could you not be driving down the road thinking all along you got power going to your unit, when in fact your unit might not be getting power at all?
Also, they sent me two different power cords, and I checked them out and still no luck. And this unit was checked out on three different cars with the same results.
Any ideas? Thanks in advance for your help!!

yeah, it definitely runs through a very quick self test with all the lights coming on and an alert sound. Sounds like you have a bad unit or something....
Are you sure the power is plugged into the lgihter adapter correctly? There's two jacks on it, one for the V1 and the other for the optional remote display. Might want to try plugging it into the other just as a test, and also open up the adapter and make sure the fuse in it is good. Could be that the fuse just busted in shipping, or got left out alltogether.
Good luck with it, you'll love it once you get it working.

Sounds like it's dead..
The V1 goes through a "Power On Self Test" cycling through the different alerts and the "Bogey Counter" will show which mode you are currently in.
You sure the coiled cord is plugged into the right side of the lighter connector.. the one with the picture of the top view of the V1... not the V1 ACC side.
Check page 25 (at least on mine) of the manual...
Thanks,

Thanks,
Normalizer, Thanks for the info. Yeah I thought the unit should make some kind of beep or something. I will check it out a little more. I hope I can get it working as me and the wife was planning on driving down to Galveston Texas to take a cruise.
We have about 8 hours of freeway driving so the Valentine would be nice to have along.

>>Pamato, Yep you were correct. I had the adaptor plugged in upside down. Funny thing...when you install stuff right it just seems to work better

Happy Valentines Day!
The V! is the best IMHO.

Today I went out with my new Valentine 1 radar detector just looking for some trouble.
I only had to drive about 3 miles and sure enough the V1 picks up the first bogey. The signal got stronger and stronger as I got closer to the radar.
The unit was now going nuts with lights and the brap brap sound. I looked and looked but did not see the radar, then there it was....
A police unit parked in a store parking lot with a radar gun aimed right at me and the MINI. HA HA I thought, even though I was not speeding when the V1 went off, it was sure nice to know this little jewel works and works well.

Don't forget to set the level of filtering you're comfortable with. Obviously, if you select more filtering, you'll get fewer extraneous bogey notifications.
fwiw, I've had mine set to max filtering for years and haven't had any unpleasant surprises...

911, I started out with the All Bogey mode, but got lots of possibly false reads, then went with max filter and the detector dropped way off on the alerts, but still sang like a bird at police radar.
Friday, me and the Mrs, will take off for Galveston Texas. All freeway driving so I'm sure the V1 will come in handy.

If possible, always try to have a "canary" within sight in front of you in case the police are using an instant-on radar gun. That way you'll get advance warning when they shoot the car you're following.
With instant-on, if you're the only car around, they'll nail you -- V1 or not.
Just make sure you don't get a ticket on this trip with your wife. You'll never hear the end of it!

Well just got back from the trip to Galveston from Okla City and back again with NO TICKETS. The Valentine One works very very well. I had it set to max filter, and it was quite most of the time, but when it did lite up and beep with either front arrow or rear arrow it was the man.
Last week on the way down to the Texas coast, on I-45 just south of Dallas, the V1 locked onto a signal from an approaching state police unit about 1/2 mile away. I had plenty of time to check my speed. I seen the trooper go past me going north and take an exit and get back on the freeway to come my direction.
Sure enough he still had his radar on and the V1 was doing its thing. He passed me at a high rate of speed and went on down the road to nail some other driver who was trying to cross the freeway in the center median. This driver I know was going to get a major ticket.
At any rate just wanted to report on my first 1300 mile road trip with the V1. The unit seems to work and work well. You just gotta watch for the instant on radar. If you get hit with that its GAME OVER if your speeding.
