05 Mini - Replacement Key Problem/Question

Hi new to this forum. I'm a transplant so to speak. We sold our BMW convertible and bought a 2005 Mini S convertible a week ago. While the BMW forum had a Mini board, someone told me this was the best Mini forum out there so here I am.

Anyway the issue. We bought the Mini from a private party and she only had one key - lost the other one. Oh well.

So off to the Mini dealer in Rockville MD. I order the key - just over $150 including tax. Based on my review of some threads here this seemed reasonable. You do not need the old key to copy I asked? No we do it by VIN number - and we need a copy of your DL and Registration for security purposes. OK - no problem I provide the documents and pay for the key. Takes a day or two and I picked it up yesterday. Try the key at home in the Mini. Well the key part works but the remote control (wireless) functions do not work. So I e-mail the parts person who sold me the key. He responds that I need to contact the service department to get the wireless function working. Really? - news to me. Wonder why he did not tell me this up front?

Questions: Is he correct? What should I expect next when I contact the dealer? Is this a 10 minute process or will I need to leave the car?

Any info you have on the replacement key wireless pairing process is appreciated. Thanks!

I'm new to MINI, but I would think you should be able to just perform the procedure from the owner's manual on p. 22.

Press "wing" button or "lock" button four times in succession
or if the vehicle is unlocked:

1. Switch the ignition on briefly, position 2,
and then off
2. Within 10 seconds, press button
and button , refer to page 24, in succession.

Hope this helps!

Reid

Ried - The 2004 directions are different from the 2005. I used the instructions in the link from ieandro and it worked perfectly. Also I could not find and directions in the 2005 owners manual. So this information really helped. Saved me a trip to the dealer! Thanks to both of you for the reply.
