R50/53 Paint
I own a pure silver MCS and the passenge door looks darker than the rest of the car, especially under certain lighting conditions. The dealer swore nothing was done to the car in Canada after it's delivery from England.
I took delivery of the car on september 27, a rainy day in Montreal. I noticed a slight difference a few days after but I could not beleive my eyes and after a careful inspection, the color is very different when the car is looked at with an angle.
I reported the problem to the dealer 5 days after I got the car on which 2 days were spent in the shop since the heater blower did not work. A technical rep from Toronto will look at the car tomorrow.
I really like the car, it has the space cloth seats which are fabulous, comfortable, nice and not slippery but rare.
The most important thing is that this car is my baby, I do not want a repainted door or car, all I want is original factory paint.
Does anybody had to deal with such a thing?
Any suggestions on how I should deal with this matter?
Thank you in advance for your help.

I know how you feel. My car was poorly repaired (probably at the VDC) and I have a spot on the right door that appears was wet-sanded through the clear and it doesn't match the rest of the door. My dealer said they will schedule an inspection by the district service manager.
Considering problems with leather in past vehicles, I decided to do without when I ordered my MCS. All the cars at the dealer had leather, so I ordered the black/grey space cloth w/o seeing it. The high point of my delivery was the appearance and comfort of the sport seats with the space cloth, and it looks great with the dark silver.

Hmmmm, may be may be not. It is not an infrequent thing for cars to be damaged during transport. Usually, depending on the extent of the damage, the VDC will repair the car. If the damage repair estimate goes over a certain Dollar amount, the dealer needs to disclose this to the buyer prior to delivery. I don't know how the Canadian MINI dealers proceed in situations such as this.

I have no doubt in my mind that your car was damaged during transport and repainted (Shoody work) at the VDC or your selling dealer. Very important to go over a new car with a fine tooth comb before signing off the papers and taking the keys!!!!!!

Sorry to break it out to ya, but no Bodyshop will ever be able to repaint or color match your car with a factory like finish. Think twice about allowing the dealer to repaint the door again. A repainted car will automatically fetch a lower resalve value because it is assumed that the car has accident repair work (Even if the original intent of repainting it was to cover a small imperfection or to rectify the color match).

Again, I don't know how to go about things like this in Canada but I would get a second opinion from an independent bodyshop to see if the car was in fact repainted in the door prior to deliver. If you can prove it was, then I would make the case to have the car replaced as you were clearly deceived by your selling dealer. Damage that either involves bodywork or paint, should be disclosed to the ultimate buyer. If they didn't and the door has been repainted, then you might have a case to reject the car and get a replacement or refund.

There is a car at my local dealer now that is being preped for delivery. I noticed the driver door was not the same tone of red as the rest of the car. It was really noticable under fluoresent light. I've been told that this happens from the factory quite often. The gun runs out of paint while painting the parts. A new batch of paint is mixed and the process continues. If your car gets caught in the middle of this new batch then there is a possiblility that the paint mixture is not 100% the same everytime.
It really seems to be a quality control problem. The factory is not suppose to start painting a car if they know the a new batch will have to made before the process finishes. But, if they are in a hurry (which we all know Mini is) to push cars out as fast as possible then this time of thing will just happen.
Not to rule out the possiblity that your car was damaged during delivery, but the last time I checked the VDC did not have paint booths. Maybe they overnighted you a new door from the factory which had a different batch of paint on it.
Who knows...
I could check the VIN of the car and let you compare it to yours to see if they were on the same boat.

Can anybody tell me exactly what is the space cloth? I've never seen it at the dealer or on the configurator from miniusa. Is it only available for S's?

Space cloth is the tissu upholstery for the MCS, Maybe you can get it with the sport seats on the MC. It is blak with the central part of the seats being some kind of grey-silver. It is really neat, I'm really happy with that, would not trade for anything else, no extra like leatherette.

I'm still fighting that issue with the dealer and BMW Canada rep. The rep told me I should have an answer by tomorrow, he is trying to work something with the dealer. I will come back tomorrow when I know and i'll keep you informed on how the whole thing evolved and sublimed.

As Hibou said, it's black on the seat bolsters and silvery grey on the middle areas. It's the only fabric available on the MCS. I picked mine up last night with the space cloth. Looks really good. A no-cost option for those of us who don't want to stick to the seats during south-western sumers yet don't want to spend the extra $1250 for leather.

The back seats are primarily the silver color. Only the small lump in the middle where the connector stalks reside and the headrests are the panther black. Not the best picture (only rear seat picture of any kind that I had on my site), but you get the point.

It took me a couple of days to realize that my passenger door was not the same color as the rest of the car
I brought my complaint to the dealership who set up a meeting with MINI Canada. The car was not delayed anywhere in the delivery process so there wasn't an opportunity for bodywork to be done on the sly. It would appear that it was a factory error, most likely occuring as a result of doors being painted away from the bodies using different paint batches.
The result is a newly painted door which DOES match the rest of the vehicle. Am I happy, of course not, but what other choices are there? Send the car back and start the wait process all over again aaaaahhhhhhhh, I don't think I could stand that! I don't enjoy talking about "the door" but thought you might like to hear from others with similar complaints.
That's how I handled the issue Lulu, you may not be comfortable with a repainted door. That leaves you free to decide on a passive route or the more aggressive routes previously noted. The important thing is to reach an agreement on the fact that the paint is wrong, you may have to get independent appraisals to prove your case. Bon chance!! I hope it is settled to your satisfaction.

The passenger door will be replaced and repainted.
As far as it goes, MINI Canada handled the case with a very comprehensive approach and I would like to say that I'm satisfied with the settlement.
I'll let you know after the job is completed.
