The redline on my 04 MCS shows 6750 -- it appears to be a dynamic scheme much like the new E46 M3 is using. On the M3, the redline adjusts as the car warms up, but on the MINI, it appears to be a constant 6750...However, there are lights to vary it quite a bit.

Does the redline actually move with the temp. of the oil, as the M3 does? If not, why the dynamic "light" scheme which allows such behavior?

My car has navigation.

not sure about it actually changing during operation...

I do know, however from reading the Mini2 CVT forum that it HAS been used by MiniUSA. Most notably, an ECU software update caused the visible redline to match up w/ the actual redline (there was a discrepency before) on the CVT.

Any farther than that I can only imagine it's a cost-saving measure. This way they can use the same tach on the CVT, 5-speed Cooper, and MCS with only a software difference between them.

It would be REALLY slick if it did behave like the E46 M3 though

A dynamic redline with a software imposed automatic cutoff would be a great feature. You can do a lot of damage to an engine if you operate at high revs before the oil reaches normal operating temp.

They could also use this approach to enforce the recommended breakin regimen.

I thought so as well, so I asked and checked, but it is NOT like the M3...the lines do not disapear as the oil temp goes up, but it really should, this way I wouldn't have had to install the aux gauges.

MINI uses the same tachometer across their product line. Therefore, the redline range of the tach needs to reflect the appropriate value for the engine to which it is connected. So MINI "programs" the appropriate redline based on the MINI model.

Pay a visit to your dealer and turn the ignition on in a MC and an MCS. You will see the MC's redline at a lower rpm than the MCS, thus, more lines will be illuminated.

Adding to Koopah, the tach is used on the MiniOne in England, smaller engine, so the redline is even lower for that, so all the lights would be red.

What a waste.

It seems pretty trivial to put a timer on the tach or to put a temp. threshold on it. The E46 M3 tach. should be an example of what MINI could have done...Oh well...
