I have had an awful rattle from my sunrrof, especially since it has gotten cooler. As per something I read here I tried to put a piece of velcro felt over the rub marks on the wind deflectors, but unfortunately that has not helped much. Any other quiick fixes or other place to put velco felt that I should know about? Thanks!

Hmmm that's odd, that's *exactly* what I was going to try - My MCS has developed a bad rattle/vibration which seems to eminate from the front edge of the sunroof on the passenger side. I notice when I crack the roof even slightly it goes away all together. So, when I looked at the wind deflectors they had apparent rub marks and thought to my self "Self, maybe you should stick a big ol' piece of fuzzy velcro over that mark and it would go away". I haven't done it yet, but sounds like it might not help anyway.

I've got to go in this week for the SES light, so I'll have the dealer take a look.

I had more of a buzz than a rattle on mine. I went in for my first oil service a week ago and the service advisor implied that he was aware of similar problems. They put some padded tape on the leading edge of the sunroof frame first to see if that worked. It did for a few days but a rattle is now very evident. The next time into the dealer, they will be replacing the sunroof casette (their terminology, not mine). I guess it's the whole frame and mechinism, other than the glass itself. Hopefully that will take care of the problem.

^ You both have 2002s...so do I; and I think I'm close to being the god of sunroof rattles. This has been my persistent problem every since day one. I've tried velcro. I've tried strips of high-density foam (.25" thick). I've had the "sunroof cassette" replaced by MINI (that's about a $1000 part...). And I STILL have a rattle.

Come warm weather, and the return of my interest in getting out and working on my car, I'll go back to the foam. I found that the velcro just wasn't thick enough. The foam did work, but it was ugly.

You're putting the stuff in the right place (on the deflectors at the rub marks), but it's just that velcro isn't thick enough for most 2002 sunroof rattles.

But bottom line? Just get used to it. Eventually, other parts will start rattling (e.g., your dash and doors) and help to drown it out.

I have the same rattle when the temp outside goes below freezing. It seem to go away once the interior of the car has warmed up. The sound seems to be coming from the front around were the opening button is located.

I have an 04 MCS and about 10 days ago there was a terrible rattle coming from the sunroof when I started out in the morning. The temperature was in the middle-30's when it started about 5 minutes into my 15 minute commute to work. It sounded like plastic on plastic, on both sides of the sunroof, but above and behind me, not from the front where the deflectors are.

After work, when it warmed up, the rattle went away, and hasn't returned since....and of course we haven't had any more mornings that cold since. Go figure!

Couple of observations other than the velcro on the wind deflector (which in my case fixed one of my first rattle issues...)

1. I had some noise from the sunroof mechanism that was fixed during one of my service visits by relubricating all moving parts of the sunroof

2. Had some horrendous rattling recently on a drive home that I have since had after washing car in cold weather (lie today at 5 degrees). Cause - Water in edges around the sunroof and between the panes that turns to ice. The ice turned out to be the cause of some very annoying rattling all around me during extremely cold weather or while driving in freezing rain. Happens especially in the -10 to 10 degree cold weather if the car happens to get wet or if snow partially melts in the garage and I go out driving around.

Don't know if this helps... good luck - I hate to agree with earlier posts about other rattles appearing to drown others out, but my '02 compared to my Dad's '03 has significantly more rattling problems. In fact I have another one in the passenger door or in the pillar behind it that is driving me nuts and I can't make the 90 min one way to the dealer for another 3-4 weeks or so! My wife swears I'll be in a straight jacket by then!!!

Has your dealer done the all around rattle treatment yet? - when I lived in Oklahoma, the Dallas dealer (John Roberts) spent an entire day installing a so called anti rattle kit (lots of packing, velcro strips etc..)

Mine has the rattle/buzzing sound. The dealer put in a new sunroof, which has a different style wind deflector. Basically where the old one would get marks on it, the new one has raised ridges on it. All was wonderful in the world of the buzzing sunroof.Until the outside temperature dropped below zero. Then the buzzing came back just like before. So seeing as how it's winter, the dealer is almost 2 hours away, and I don't intend on opening the sunroof, I shut it on a nicely folded shop rag. Rattle/buzzing is gone, until I take the rag out.

I have an '04 and also have a buzzing/rattle coming from the sunroof. It's not from the front though, it's from the back left corner. If you press up on the black plastic, or the fabric between the two sunroofs, it kills the sound. Unfortunetly, it is neither safe, nor "cool" looking driving around with your hand on the roof  It does appear to be a temp related problem though.

Have a 04 with 1800 miles, sunroof starting to rattle. It seems to depend mostly on road surface. Could most of the cause of rattles be from stiff run flats?. Has anybody had the dealer really fix the rattle? :???:

Try another place for your felt strip. the underside of the leading edge of the sunroof (the glass) itself. It's worked for me in all but the coldest of weather.

I am glad I didn't get the sunroof. One less rattle area to worry about.
