rear plate mounting screws

This may seem like a silly question, but here it is. We bought our MCS used. The rear plate bracket no longer has threads in the holes for mounting the plate...the prior owner had some oversized screws on there that basically held by digging into the plastic of the bracket. So, I ordered a replacement bracket and mounting hardware. Everything is great, except that the 4 screws used to affix the plate to the bracket seem to be much, much too long. They look like they would go through plate and bracket, punching out the foam backing, and hit the metal of the hatch. I'm assuming that the wrong size screws were used, although they are marketed as fitting this particular vehicle. I haven't tried finding shorter screws with the same size thread, but will probably do that soon. I'm just curious about whether the OEM screws are as short as it seems that they would have to be. I currently have the plate held on with zip ties...which is NOT acceptable!

AutoZone (etc) has "kits" for this, complete with assorted screws, nuts and press-fit plastic retainers. You should be able to find something that suits your application.
