I know the mini gets great milage to the gallon, but I recently heard it only takes premium octane gasoline. Is there any truth to that statement?

It'll take anything you give it, but it should only be driven with 91 octane. (or better, if you can't find a pump w/91)... The importance of this has been discussed (amonst other places), here.
