Extra key?

Anyone have suggestions on the purchase of a replacement key, w/transponder only. The nearest Mini dealer is a 500 mile round trip. I have a locksmith who can cut the blank if I supply it. Also, I have a major issue with having to prove I am the car owner just to purchase a key.

Thanks, Chevy in Amarillo

If you have acess to a fax machine, just pay for the key with a credit card, send the dealer a copy of your drivers license and Registration for the MINI ( your name has to be on both - is that the major problem ?)

Dealer can then mail you the key saving you the trip.

And as long as you don't have comfort access, just leaving the new key in the ignition for 30 seconds in pos 2 is supposed to marry it with the BCM I think.

I'll add that the "transponder only" (no lock remote) key is just under $60 (I just got one myself), plus possibly shipping for 500 miles.

Sorry but if you can't prove your the owner of the car the MINI dealer won't sell you a key, it's MINIUSA policy so they have to send on the proof to them, otherwise MINI won't send the dealer the key.

They do this to prevent someone from just going through the parking lot, writing down your VIN and ordering a key. Just like they did in Gone in 60 seconds.

Hello Chevy,
Don't know which model you are driving (besides that '58 chevy ),

Please note that some models have functions that are programmed and then stored in the Mini keyfob (like whether to allow auto-down windows etc). So, make sure to check with your MINI dealer prior to shipping, whether there is certain functionality to be activated in that replacement key.

I agree, but isn't that what -=gRay rAvEn=- already said?
