I can't seem to find anything on this, maybe I didn't search correctly. I'm not blonde either

Lojack, I might want it, but I'm not going to pay 1995 to get lojack + maintenance + floor mats. I wanted to see if anyone had it installed and what they think.

Do you have an alarm, too? How much did it cost and where did you get it installed? I'd like an alarm instead of LoJack since LJ is a little big brother for me.

what should i expect to spend aftermarket? MINI of course offered to install an alarm for $695. UM...no thanks, I'll hire some kid to stand there with a can of compressed air first.

Gidget - I put a LoJack system on my MCS. $695.00 for piece of mind isn't a bad price. There is no maintenance fee - if you car is stolen you call the police, tell them your LoJack number and they activate the unit which puts out a signal that they can follow.
#1 - find out if LoJack is available in your area. Although it's not in my town (my MINI is locked in it's garage every night with locks on the doors) it is available in the towns I drive through every day.

I live in LA now and it seems logical to have it installed since this isn't exactly a city full of "angels"

One MAJOR thing to consider is whether you live in an area where the police track via Lojack. Just because Lojack says it's an area they cover doesn't mean the police care. Although Portland OR is covered territory by Lojack, the local police will not search for your car using it. Don't ask me how I know. I find it to be a worthless expense unless you are *sure* your car will be stolen. Just go for an alarm. If the theif can defeat your alarm, they can defeat your Lojack. But since there aren't many brilliant theives, the chances of someone defeating your alarm is quite slim. Why do you need secondary/backup protection from car theft? Is your neighborhood that bad??

I had it installed by the dealer $695.- Check out their site at [URL=www.lojack.com]
Here in MA we get 35% of the comprehensive part of the insurance, so in a few years it'll pay for itself.

If someone steals my Mini and drives it, who knows how, I think I'd rather eat the deductible on my insurance and get a new one. They can have it.

I agree with 2minis, if someone rips off my car, I'm not sure I want it back in the condition I am likely to get it in. Lojack advertises that they get the car back in a matter of hours. It's basically up to your local police how fast they use the GPS to locate your car and do something about it.

First of all it's "Peace of mind". Second, if you live anywhere close to the border of Mexico, forget LoJack, because you car will likely be in Mexico and then there's no recovery possible.

I have a MCS in México city and I have LoJack, because here they dont take youre car when it is parked, they usually put a gun to youre head at a red light.
Usually they take all the stolen cars down to Guatemala or Russia.

Dont worry so much if you live in the USA, you pay the insurence and you can get a brand new mini, here youre lucky is they dont ask for a ransom to youre family.
Think aboute it ¡¡

happy Motoring.

I'm just really hesitant to have ANYTHING in my car that can track where I am at any given moment. How do I really know what nobody will ever track my car unless I call to have them activate it... It just reminds me of how someone in WNY had his Easy-Pass (electronic toll colection) records used against him in a divorce trial. And I'm not talking about records that he had laying around his house. The laywer called the company in charge of Ez-Pass and they gave them to the laywer!.. There's just something not quite right about that, and how do I know that LoJack records won't start appearing in court one day..

OK. Gidget is here, oh she's beautiful ::sigh:: maternal pride

I am scheduled for LoJack, but now I think I might call and swap that out for the alarm - i've already paid the outrageous price for Lojack which is the same for the alarm installed by BMW.

People that have the alarm, does that make you feel 'safer' than it would w/loJack?

my jetta has an alarm, but it really wouldn't make a difference since if they want to take the car, they will take it anyhow ya know. I'll call my insurance to see what the price differences will be tomorrow. I'd feel better w/an alarm since I've had one for the past 6 years.

Other than that...she's gorgeous and i am in LOVE. OH...i'm going to have fun.

Gidget, go with LoJack! Especially in LA!

The important difference between an alarm and LoJack is that if someone wants to steal your car badly enough, they WILL! An alarm can be bypassed, LoJack cannot. No one knows that you have LoJack installed (but you and LoJack), so they can't bypass it- besides, they hide the transmitter in a different location inside each car. It is only activated when you notify the police that it has been stolen, so it DOES NOT track your every move each day.

Another bonus is that having LoJack greatly reduces your monthly car insurance bill! So, it pays for itself.

I'm not a LOJACK or alarm fan, especially where I live, in the Los Angeles area. In large cities, who responds when alarms go off. Typically no one and treat it as an annoyance. Besides most alarms can be bypassed. Bigger problem in SoCal or any area in the southwest is that most stolen cars go south to the border and LoJack doesn't track into Mexico. So unless the authorites are on it IMMEDIATELY, your car is usually gone. Just not a Lojack fan. Not that I ever want to see my Mini go bye bye, I'm just sticking with my auto/theft insurance. Besides the key codes on MINIS
(BMW"S) are a theft deterrent in themselves. Bottom line in my experience, if a professional thief wants your car, it's theirs
