Has any one tried octane booster with 87 octane? Does it work?

I filled up with Exxon 93 and found it to give me less mileage than Shell and Chevron. The local garage, which also sells gas, told me that Shell hasn't yet converted to 10% Ethanol and neither has he. He said that by Jan 2010 every station will have to be at 10%.

I've also noticed that since the temps went from 80F to 95F, my efficiency seems to have slipped about 2mpg (A/C has been constant). Can outside air temp make that big a difference?

Yes. Also consider that the relative humidity will also effect your mileage as well. The hotter and wetter the air is, the more it requires a higher percentage of fuel to reach the optimum combustion conditions. I believe the same could be said for cold/dry air. There is a "sweet spot", of sorts. I'm sure someone more qualified can chime in and explain more

Ouch. Since I live in Alabama, I've got about three more months of hot humid weather.

Its cheaper to just buy 92...it costs about $2.50 extra for premium, compared to most octane boosters ($5-$8). Plus octane boosters dont necessarily get you the octane rating you think you are getting, and some of them are just plain crap (like "NOS" brand which is 60%+ Kerosene)

Have used 93 in the MC since Liz got it and went driving Friday up some back roads to Greenville, then I-85 to Charlotte, down I-77 to Rock Hill, and back roads back to Greenwood. 280 miles for the entire trip, between 99*F and 102*F OAT, and only 1/2 tank of gas. Considering the fuel cell is about 13.5 gallons, that looks to be around 40mpg on the 2006 MC. And considering how I drive it... not bad at all.

Would love to, but the web site doesn't give a list of distributors. Did I miss something?

I used Lucas Fuel System Cleaner and all I can say is this stuff is amazing. Not only does it make your gas more slippery and burn better it lubricates the upper cylinders and makes the care run very smooth.

The car feels quicker when I use it. I think you can use it every tankful. According to the bottle it replaces the need for octane booster.

Does that mean you can use 87 octane plus Lucas and still meet the OEM requirement?

I wouldn't go so far to say it would meet OEM requirements because I don't know how much it boost octane, but it will make your car run smoother and more efficiently.

Besides there is not much difference in price anymore between 87 octane and 93. Even the discount gas stations prices are equal to the premium brands without the quality

I'm very wary...

If the cars used had been in the fleet for a while, a lot of the benefits can be attributed to cleaner injectors and better atomization. It would be interesting to see how the cars ran after the CLEAN stuff stopped being used.

One of the claimes on the website is really problematic, that about sulpher. They claim that because tthier stuff is less than 30 ppm sulpher, it will have a benefical effect on catalysit life. While it's true that the pint or whatever of 30 ppm liquid will lower total tank mass of sulpher, one pint in 15 gallons or whatever of gasoline is a close to statistically insignificant change in total sulpher content. While this doesn't mean much in itself, it does indicate that there is very close to fraudulent representations on the site. I'm wondering what other truths they stretched...

No. The lucas product he is talking about is a fuel system cleaner, which I use and like. But it is not an octane booster, and costs $5/bottle, so buying premium ($2.50 per fill more) is still cheaper than a bottle of most anything.

So, what I take from this is that if I'm using Shell or Chevron and already keeping my system clean, the value of the Lucas product would be extra lubrication. And, if I'm using Royal Purple, the difference is likely to be unnoticeable. At least, it should not be expected without further evidence.

I just read something in Consumer Reports, I think, that said if the owners manual says premium recommended you can go with regular gas. If the manuel says premium required then use only premium.

The MINI manual does say "recommended"; however, why would you feed your MINI scraps when you know he wants steak? Spoil your MINI.

I have used both I-85 and premium(93 octance) and the only noticable difference is a performance loss, but yet ran fine with no knocks or anything of that nature.

Why is it that some of the best responses always come from those that have not tried something?

Sorry Matt I thought you were talking about clean power

I DARE YOU TO TRY A BOTTLE ON A 1/2 TANK OF GAS AND THEN COME BACK AND POST!
So do you use this on every tank full? It looks like it might be a good idea right before getting a smog check .

I have used it for years to help guys that would normally fail. Run it straight and you could have a dead cat and the car would pass.

Try it and see if you can NOT use it? Just one bottle and you will be hooked.

Oh it smells good out the exhaust. The bike guys use this all the time around Cali?

From: Washington. No, the other one.
The Lucas is a Fuel Injector cleaner & lubricant. No octane boosting involved. If you use a Tier 1 fuel (Chevron, Shell, etc.) on a regular basis, it won't have a major effect. If, on the other hand, you shop for gas by price, you might notice a significant change. Of all of the cleaner/lubricants out there (and I'm familiar with most) Lucas and Techron (by Chevron) have stood out head and shoulders above the rest.
I dump a bottle in on every other oil change.

I guess my question was not worded right. So do you use this as a additive in conjuction with a lower octane gas in every tank inlieu of just getting high octane, 91+,? Or do you use it just for smog checks or just as a maintence thing?
