Don't you ding at me mister! (a temp gauge problem)

Hey,

I've got a 2003 mini with a tach and speedometer. Since it's been cold lately (below 35 degrees Fahrenheit) my little temp gauge on my tach dings and blinks at me. It doesn't just do it when I turn my car on, but it also does it if I'm driving around and the temp drops below a certain temp. But the thing is, it doesn't do it at a CERTAIN temp. It just randomly dings. I've looked in the user manual (I've read through a few times) and found nothing on this little phenomenon. Is Zabimaru just mad because it's cold outside?

Thanks in advance for any ideas you may have for why this might be.

My 03 dings at 37 degrees. If mine is in the garage and I go out into 20 degrees temps it only dings once or twice and thats it. It can go above 37 and below and still ding again.
Check under the bonnet to make sure the temp sensor is not just hanging there.

My '05 MCS only dings at 37degrees once and that's all. Just a reminder to watch for black ice!

It will always ding at 37. If you let the car sit for awhile and go back out and start it up the engine will have heated up the sensor and this may be the reason it tends to ding more often.

Yes. it is warning that the outside temp has dropped close enough to freezing that there may be ice on the road, esp. bridges and overpasses. One ping only, Vasili!

Just turn up the tunes and you wont hear it.
It will ding at 37 degrees. if you go above and then drop below it will ding again. I find it hardly noticeable

Thank you all. After reading this, I drove around today, and you were right, at 37 degrees it dinged! I had no idea! I guess when it dinged before I wasn't paying attention to it and I didn't notice when it was going off. It does it in the morning too when I go out and it's only 20 degrees outside. This is really awesome, thank you all for the note!
