A/C button - or compressor, any quick fixes?

2006 Cooper S Coupe - I'm such a non - A/C user which makes this all the more frustrating (given the recent summer heat).
Last October is about the last time i used the AC but i do remember the button sticking a little. Now it simply does not blow cold air. I can't remember the sound of the compressor coming on because it's been so long.
Here's what I've done:
->I've checked the fuses
->I've checked the relays
->I've added two quick shots of the refrigerant
All to no avail.
I cannot afford $700 or $1350 right now (other posts that said compressor and valve), can anyone suggest an easy fix that I might have missed?
79K on the car, but AC only used sporadically for two-three months in each of the three years since i've owned it.

Otherwise I love the car - but this is a bummer!!!

Thanks! And i'm trying the power steering fan too

Yeah i definitely am not paying for a new compressor, but i found a post about the power steering fan being a possible problem as well. My idle doesn't change, the compressor doesn't turn on, but based on my lack of usage, I'm just hard pressed to think that it's gone out after hardly any use, I think the electricals or some small problem is where it's at.

Thanks!
