`03 Pre-purchase Question(s)

Somewhat surprisingly (to me), I'm looking at the possible purchase tomorrow of an `03 (R50? ... not the "S") w/72,000 miles, and I'm wondering (hoping) someone will give me a head's-up on anything in particular that I should maybe look for - "problem-wise" (or POTENTIAL problem-wise)?

The price on this little rig almost seems 'too good to be True', and we all know what the reality is with that...

Thanks in advance,

Ok, the list is good, but I was hoping to learn about any known probs such as the infamous 'power-steering pumps' that I've read about elsewhere.

Anyone have any words of wisdom concerning that, or anything else please? Transmission probs (potential or otherwise) scare the HELL outta me. The vehicle I'm looking at is the 5 spd manual...nothing out of the ordinary with those (`03) - correct? Notorius oil leaks and excessive (out of the ordinary) cooling-system probs spook me too...

There is the potential for all the things that scare you happen, but if this helps, I have a 03 Cooper (non-S, just-a-cooper) with 105,000 miles on it, and it runs like it's new, has a few minor mods, just needs normal oil changes, regular guy maintenance things.

It has had some issues in the past, but it's been the best car I have owned, and at least 200,000 miles will happen while I own it.

Thanks Mark. Let me see if I have got it correct though (regarding 2003 models):

The transmission probs I've heard about are with the autos (CVT) - right?

The power steering pump/electrical fires - was there ever a recall issued on that?

And I have read about a good many electrical/battery probs and seemingly excessive door/latch (not opening) and window (motors going bad) problems - should I have extra concerns there?

Oh and another question: with 11:1 compression (correct?) these babies require premium fuel, no?

Thanks again....
