Fuel Pump Drama... could it be something more?

Hi All
I've seen a few threads about fuel pump issues on here, thought I would share my story and hope that someone has found the answer. I have a 2004 Mini Cooper (not S) with 38,500 miles on it. A few weeks ago my car started lagging in the morning- the engine would turn over but would start delayed, and the next day wouldn't start at all. I took it in to a local shop and had to get a new fuel pump ordered from Boston (I'm in Providence). Everything was great, but two days later again slow to start in the morning and the day after that died again! Took it back to the shop and they told me the pump they replaced it with was faulty. So another pump ordered and currently in my car. It drove great for a few days, but it's now starting slower in the morning and I'm worried it's going to die again. What usually happens is that if I can get it started in the morning, then it runs perfectly for the rest of the day. Could there be a problem only when it doesn't run for longer periods of time (10 hours or so) ? I looked in the manual and couldn't find anything about a 40,000 mi service, but maybe it just needs to be tuned? Any help is greatly appriciated! Thanks!!
