2002 Speaker Distortion

Please excuse this newbie question. I have a 2002 Mini with the standard sound system, i.e. it is not the HK sound system. Recently my right front speaker (passenger door) is distorting horribly. It even crackles and pops when the radio is not on although you have to be listening for it. None of the other speakers does it. My question is what is going on and how do I fix it? And can a complete hack with nothing more than a set of screw drivers fix it or should I suck it up and take it to the dealer?

Thanks for any advice!

blow off the dealer...

my first guess is that you have a torn speaker cone. This wouldn't be too surprising in that the stock speakers aren't that good. Search around for how to remove the door panel to replace the speaker. Do both doors.

It is possible you have a cooked output transistor in your head unit. They come up for sale from time to time in the marketplace.

I had the same thing happen on 2 different cars....

We are going back some 30 years here on the first issue I had the crackle pop and distortion ((also from my right passenger speaker) although the vehicle was a Porsche 911 it may be the same issue. When I removed the speaker I found the positive wire connection frayed and it was touching the negative/ground wire, causing the distortion and pops.

The other was more recent when I removed the door panel to expose the speaker, I found the glue that surrounds the paper cone to have come apart (due to age and weathering). Just replaced the speaker on that one for a quick fix.
