R50/53 Name calling
So I've kinda stayed away from the car naming - not sure if people named their New Beetles (and I seemed kinda out there on Mars with respect to the stupid amount of money I dumped into the non turbo thing - although I loved it!), pretty sure no one names their bmw and absolutely sure no one would admit to naming their porsche! And, it must be an internal, personal conflict that I can't resolve naming my car with a female name (maybe it's b/c the wife has hello kitty stickers inside her Audi which just makes me cringe anytime I drive it) or maybe it's that I feel the car looses it's aggressive little british bulldog kick your butt, screaming like a demon appeal if it doesn't have some aggressive name - I dunno...
But, now reading this thread, I feel obligated to name the car so here we go ---- it's red (and it seems more red than the Chili Red), it has the japanese rising sun graphic on the roof and one of the best movies of the 80's has this title, so I'm call the car (gender neutral!!!) ----- RED DAWN!

I'm gonna go with "yes" on the issue of New Beetle owners naming their cars. If you have flowers in a vase on your dash, I'm pretty sure the car is going to have a name. I saw one with those Rudolph-my-ride kits yesterday.

Way to go on the name! That flick's a classic.
Wolverines!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm currently driving a '06 Royal Gray MCS. I was considering several colors before ordering. However, a trip to Paris at the time cemented my decision... seeing a couple of Royal Grays I knew it was the one for me. Upon my return, I dropped into my dealership to order. The MA said, "Have you ever seen this color? It looks like dirty tea." Thus, my car is named, "Chai".
Pat
. I actually found the chick standing in front of me more appealing than the show. Sometimes I think certain bands should just realize their best work and stop there. Guns and Roses should have stopped after Appitite
I had never named a car before my '05MCS. I was inspired by many on NAM after reading a number of posts with proper names for their hotrods. Taken from my favorite cartoon series as a kid, Bugs Bunny and Friends, I named my little red monster, Gossamer. Here she is resting on the side of Highway One in Southern California - Pacific Coast Highway - today.

A great movie in its time. Right up there with The Outsiders.
It's not cute...
It's mean.
I named my first one Quicksilver because it was quicker than the truck I had before it, and it was silver. I named my 09 MCS Reba (after Reba McEntire - she has big red hair) even though I'm not a big fan of country western.

I had a motor scooter in HS that my father referred to as "That damn thing" and so it was called "Thing". Whe I got my first car, a VW Bug, it had to be named "Leibling" after that all of the cars I really liked got names.
Current vehicles:
"Sparky" is named after "Low Spark of High heeled Boys", the first song my wife and I danced to (she knew all the words and I knew she was a keeper); the plate is LOSPARK. My Colorado Pickup is named "Mangus Colorado" after the Apache Indian Chief and has the plate "LALDYLA" after the Bob Dylan song "Lay Lady Lay"; my red 'vette convertible is "Red Lady" and the plate is 6ZRDLDY (Sexy Red Lady) and my HD Street Bob is Rufus after the Latin name for the American Bobcat, Rufus Lynx--the plate is RLYNX.

My wife and I have always named all our cars, usually based on the first name of the marque or model. (Eddie the Envoy, Gabriel the GTI, Zeek and Zach the twin 350Z's)
Blue Eis is the exception though.
She's named Blue Eis (pronounced just like ICE) partially because of her light blue color and the fact that her tail-lights are ice-white ("Eis" is the German word for ice).
She's also named Blue Eis because she will always remind me of my mother's bright blue eyes (homonym for ice).
I found my little MINI at a used car lot on a trip to PA when my mother went into the hospital for something minor. I put down a deposit on the car while they did some repairs to it. I stayed in PA with my family for a number of weeks, but unfortunately, things didn't turn out well for Mom and she passed away. I decided to go thorugh with buying the MINI anyway, and picked her up the day after Mom's funeral.
Mom was always a maverick and over-achiever; big in the civil rights movement, raising us kids in hard times, doing what others said couldn't be done - so immortalizing her with a JCW MINI named Blue Eis is quite appropriate.

Many years ago my sister and her husband bought a yellow VW bug convertable with a black top. My other sister, just back from Germany, named it "Gleb Vogelin" meaning "little yellow bird". As the letter "V" in German is pronounced as an "F" the car was named "Fogie". That car lasted forever so the name was around our family for a long time. My mini is black over mellow yellow so when everyone saw it they started calling it "Fogie". That was fine with me, as BMW built her, but it is a guy's car after all, so I ordered a dragon roof grafic in yellow. Dragons are birds, sort of.......
