2005 CVT 2005 Mini Questions

My 2005 mini is going to be out of warranty Dec 31st. I have only owned it since last Feb. I have almost 50k on the car and still owe a lot of money on the car.

I am really worried about being out of warranty. Mini said the extended warranty would be 2500-4000. I just cannot afford it! I am really worried about CVT failing due to all the posts I have seen on here.

Should I try to sell my Mini or trade it in? I love my car but if the CVT ever failed I would NEVER be able to pay for a new one at the prices I have seen.

I owe 16k on the car still. Should I try to trade in for a newer car?

Advice please!!

Well, I never thought mine would fail. No way, no how. Then, a year after I got it... boom.

The CVTs that fail tend to do so at over 70,000 miles, and I'm assuming you will have put at least that many miles on it in a year or two. Your CVT may not fail, but you might want to find your Cooper another home by then if you truly cannot afford the risk.

(Now that I think about it... you could always try getting an extended warranty from a company other than MINI. I know there are a few people here who have them and swear by them.)

the only problem is.. can you get 16k on trade ? nope.

i have an 05 cvt also. mine has been acting funny.. shifting hard.. slamming in to gear.. etc. i have had it to the dealer 3 times.. documenting the problems.. they say 'its normal'
i am going out of warrenty in june.

i have an appt the day after thanksgiving to have it looked at again. they are stocking a cvt just incase they cant' fix it.. they will put a new one in for me same day !!!

then . .maybe i will keep mine.
i was thinking of getting a new manual tranny one but.. who knows

good luck with yours .. you know .. if you sell it. they buyer will drive it 250k with no problems .. LOL

Check with your dealership about financing the extended warranty if you really want to keep the car. Also if they have options about coverage, buy the minimum coverage that includes the transmission.

It might not be worth it to you but you can check out warrantydirect.com. I went with them at the suggestion of another NAM member. It is cheaper than the dealer prices you were quoted. Many have negative things to say about EWs but I have been lucky in that the 2 I purchased previously. They paid for themselves one in repairs and one had a money back guarranty if never used. I thought it was a gimmick but I got the $$ back at the end of the term. I did loose out on the interest (probably $50).
I hope I never need to use the one for my MINI.

I have gathered a lot information about extended warranties that may be of interest to you. I too will consider one when ours expires.
