Was cruising around the dealerships today (gotta kill the time SOMEHOW till my '04 CR/W MINI gets here...lol), the Chrysler Crossfire is a sharp looking car...long hood, short rear deck, 2-seater (being 6'2" the rear seats in my MINI will be useless anyways), and Mercedes-supplied 6-cylinder engine. A little steep at $35,000 not including the $5,000 "market adjustment" add-on fee...but if money were not an object, a Crossfire would take the place of my MINI in my garage.

While at a dealer the other day dropping off my JEEP, I took a long look at a Crossfire, which I hadn't seen since the auto show. Seems sort of cool, but damn if that grooved hood isn't the stupidest thing I've ever seen!

>>Yes, TMGRobyn, the only time in the last 5 years or so that a car stopped me in my tracks was when I first laid eyes on the Audi TT. Talk about radical styling. If I could get another car, that would be it, though the new Nissan ZX's and Infiniti's have killer looks and turn my head as well. However, the MINI is in that category. I was absolutely knocked out when I saw it, and I'm now driving an AFFORDABLE automotive dream machine. Not sure I'd change, even w/ the dough to do so. In fact, I don't even want an S, as I much prefer the lines and trim of the regular Cooper, but that's another thread

Excluding ultra-luxury performance cars, I'd say the new Mazda RX-8. In many ways it's similar to the MINI in that it's very much it's own thing. "4 seats + 4 doors?" - what's unique about that? Well, it's most definitely a sports car. Handles like a dream, is fast even if it (like the MINI) lacks low-end torque, requires driver involvement, has an exceptional cockpit layout that's superior to the overly styled MINI interior (chill!! It's just an opinion), has a real - if not overly spacious trunk - and is priced very competitively. A fully optioned RX-8 is about $32,000 (US). Now when you figure that a new MCS with the Cooper works package runs over 30 grand, the RX-8 becomes a very serious alternative. It'll also leave an JCW MINI in the dust. That said, I still ordered a Chilli Red MCS. Go figure.

>>What I'm interested in, is what cars really jump out at you as being serious >>competitors for the MINI in all of its aspects. Fun, styling, comfort, handling, eye-catching.

With this in mind it has to be a four seater. I have a young son. Hmmm... Has to be small, I love small cars. Smaller the better, but must seat four and be practical. I currently drive a Miata so the MINI is very practical to me. And finally must corner like MAD!! I've look all over the web and can think of nothing... VW Golf GTI 20th Anniversary model comes close. Focus has no personality. Mercedes doesn't have a clue. Civics are boring and lack styling.

That's sad I tried real hard to spend the money you so graciously gave us and the best I can do is the MINI and a bunch of diapers!

I'd get a fully restored 1965 MINI Cooper S. All numbers matching with the Mk3 flare kits and Rally Rack. I'd also get a BMW 3.0 CSI 70's vintage. Oh yeah, a 1977 935 twin turbo. I drove one in Germany and fell in love.

ummm... I think that's it! except for the Aprillia Mille. Any bike that can hit 202 with no modifications right off the floor is the coffin I want!

A fully restored 1954 Chevy Pickup truck.

Well, I sold mine while in high school and have regretted it ever since (high school was 18 yrs ago).

The new Chevy SSR is appealing because of my ties to the '54 pickup I owned. If I hadn't owned that vehicle, I don't know that I would give it a second look.

See ya,
JS

OK...that's it. My original thread concept has officially been murdered.

I would like to hand out the "Staying on Topic" award to rcase13. Congratulations.

Don't think I've ever heard a Cobra referred to as classy!

Tough question. Money wasn't an object and I still bought my MINI. I'd be compelled to finally get that late 70's Aston Martin V8 Volante (Oscar India). But I'd be cheating as I won't accept giving up my Cooper to get it.

Thanks for bringing up Aston Martin...a V12 Vanquish would be a nice addition to the stable...

hey. Don't knock the Sarao until you've driven one. it handles, like a car considering it's, well a truck. goes great on long trips. as it was designed for it. most jeepney drivers are able to weave it around congested Manila traffic. It can still accelerate despite having 10-12 people onboard, and it, in typical tuner fashion, holds a sound system 3 times the total cost of the vehicle. and if it wasn't for the fact that they are typically headers-straight pipe and extremely loud, (and dont pass smog and are VERY expensive to import) I would probably have one here.

the only sample photo I could find was one whose owner had poor color sense. (they normally come from sarao in polished stainless)
