R50/53 OK, is the "stumble' that's been talked about on acceleratio
Finally made it to Roadshow MINI and drove two 5-speed MC's like the one I have on order. On both of them there was an engine, "stumble" every time I completely released the gas petal. The engine would slow down and "shutter" and then smooth out. Since it happened on two of them should I assume this is normal? If any other car did this I wouldn't stop bugging the dealer until it was fixed.

1.) Stumble occurs on both acceleration and deceleration.
2.) We haven't stopped bugging the dealers--and it'd be nice if that's all there was to it.
3.) check out the million-page long "Stumble" thread in teh "beneath the bonnet" forum.

Hmmm...in a nutshell, here are my thoughts:
1) "Stumble" as defined on MCO is an acceleration issue. It occurs upon release of the clutch--more precisely, it is the exact moment of clutch pedal release at which the gears are fully engaged.
2) Any deceleration issues are typically referred to as "Yo-yo" and occur most frequently on MCSs in 2nd and 3rd gear, when decelerating around 1900 RPMs. There is a surging feeling somewhat like engine breaking, but it occurs in spurt on off on off very rapidly.
What you are feeling is, I believe, fairly normal for manual tranny cars. I've heard (but cannot attest to it personally) that some Porsches will virtually give you whiplash in 1st gear if you pull your foot straight off of the accelerator.
This is my 1st full-time manual transmission car, so I really don't know that much, but I have adapted my driving to the car itself. Essentially...if all of this happened in 1st gear, I'd say it isn't really much to get concerned over. Again, I can't explain it, and I'm not saying that it's a good thing or a bad thing, but that it's something that I've adapted to quite comfortably--unlike the stumble, which you can somewhat adapt to, but can never be completely normal...
Other thoughts from other folks?
(EDIT: By the way, Toast; notice that the problem occurred when the driver's foot was completely removed from the ACCELERATOR--that ain't the Stumble!)
