R50/53 DIY Coolant Flush
Zerex G-05 is great stuff.
How much was the flush
Thanks,
I will check into it here, but I am pretty leary about these places.......there are many horror stories about Quick Lube places.

AM,
So we have a T in the heater line to push the water in.......easy with the Prestone kit.
But the hose fitting at the upper radiator hose has me confused. Wouldn't we need the drain hose to be at the lower radiator hose rather than the upper ?
BTW,
What do you use to hold the old coolant for disposal/recycle ?

2) Schucks/Checker/Kragen (Shuck's in your area) carries a green recycle container similar to the oil drain containers, for antifreeze. The hard part is finding someplace that will take it. The county waste collection sites around here have tanks for that sort of thing.
1) Want the water to flow up thru the radiator for reverse flow.

My recycle curbside pickup takes my Mobil 1.......but not Antifreeze.
AM,
The BMW part number for the upper elbow is 17127515487-BOE Pipe Elbow (or 17 12 7 515 487-BOE with the spacings).
Cost from Pelican is $5.25 (w/another $5.50 shipping
) .
I went ahead and ordered one as I would rather do my work on a new part than disable the MINI during the process.
Once it arrives I will try to drill and tap it for a 1/2" pipe thread.
If that is sucessful I will try to install a 1/2" MPT to 3/4" MHT brass adapter to which we can connect a regular garden hose to serve as the drain/exit point of the flush process.
Will post pics and results IF this works.
Jim

Hmmmm,
Called three Valvoline lube shops in my area.........NONE will touch a MINI
They all cite issues with the oil filter canister. I pointed out that I was asking about a Coolant Flush, but they say no MCs.
jrprich;
couple of #'s you can call for disposal:
Portland Metro area - 503.234.3000
outside Metro area - 800.732.9253
List of places around Portland area that take AF can be found here:
http://www.deq.state.or.us/lq/pubs/f...Antifreeze.pdf
Looking forward to what you do with the elbow. Not sure about drilling and tapping plastic for a fitting, but possibly a thru fitting with threaded nut/seal on inside might prove to be strong enough. I'm looking at some 1 1/4" sanitary plumbing elbows (the plastic is much heavier than the MINI elbow)

Had the numbers but the sites are miles away and at $4 a gallon........well you get it.
As to the plastic elbow. Just a place to start........if you find a more suitable subsitute, please let us know. But I think with some JB Weld around the threads it may be fine unless the OEM elbow is really thin wall.
Irony is a biach
So all this talk about doing a coolant flush......my wife calls me on her cell says She is a couple of blocks from home and the MINI is SMOKING
She gets home, coolant is all over the engine and undecarrage......the fans are running like a 747 jet engine. I let if cool down, looks like the radiator cap failed.......it was 1/2 open. Seems to be all out of coolant, so I remove the upper radiator hose and loosen the two bleeder valves and fill her back up with a 50/50 mix...........NO NEED TO FLUSH IT NOW

A VERY HOT flush.............
Seems to be OK now.
I am still waiting on the top hose elbow from Pelican..........once I finally get it I will advise on how durable it looks for a hose tap for flushing.

Just and FYI, these guys http://www.ecstuning.com carry MINI parts are cheaper then Pelican, and have impeccable customer support.

How'd you ever make out, jrprich?
I may go the route of calling my local Valvoline station and seeing if they'll touch a MINI. Last coolant flush I did (on a Subaru), I nearly drowned in the green stuff.

........no damage done, but it was a HOT FLUSH. So after she cooled I just refilled 50/50 with the correct coolant Thread
