R50/53 Any suggestions for a hot shift knob?
I mean temperature hot. (...this came up in passing on another topic and I'd love to hear your ideas on this specific issue.) Every afternoon, I sear my palms on my MINIs blisteringly hot shift ****. Its so hot, I'm even concerned about safety because I have to shift so awkwardly to avoid burns. My previous two rides were automatics...so are there any new state-of-the-art solutions for this. Has anybody knitted a shift **** cozy???
This is a big problem (with the opposite in winter) with my Whalen shift **** -it's solid steel.
I remove it and stick it in one of the cup holders when I remember otherwise i just grin and bear it.
Not trying to patronizing but I noticed that you were coming back from automatics - you really should not hold the shift ****. It is sufficient to use the flat of your hand to push up shifts and finger tips to pull down ones. I have read where people have actually pulled the stock **** right off while trying to do a fast shift and this just means they are trying to steer it through the gate. much more efficient IMHO to push or pull gently from above and let the lever find its own way to the next gear. Obviously going to 5/6 or reverse needs a bit of guidance.
Someone (AprilWhine?) did knit something and if you look in the Miata vendors there is someone selling covers - unfortunately with the Miata logo

I feel your pain! (no seriously, felt it....it's hot!) The only way I got rid of this (and yes, socks have been suggested and I just can't do that to Lola!) is to find a nice shady place to park the MINI at work...that way, the sun is not beating down and warming that shifter up for the 5 o'clock drive home!
Good luck, whatever you decide to do!
