R50/53 Cooper S: Buy, wait, or avoid entirely?
Another MC v MCS derivative thread. Well, this member's $.02- if the S came w/out a hoodscoop and w/ the Cooper's chrome touches, I'd probably have one. I chose form over function- period. More power? Well, going from a minivan to a Cooper made that issue a moot point for me. Pretty hard to go anywhere but up from the bottom of that barrel
Oh, and I meant to add that if I had a G35 in the stable, I wouldn't much think about power as an issue. As most MINI owners will tell you, it's not the straight line stuff which makes our smiles widest, it's the areas w/ the 25 and 35 mph signs.
As an enthusiast for both the G35 and MCS, I'd say go ahead and get the S unless you want some of the styling details that are only available on the regular Cooper.
It's tough to give up horsepower, and as someone already pointed out, there's not a lot of cost difference between the two, so the horsepower is worth it. Otherwise, the contrast between the torque-y G35 and go-kart MINI might make you appreciate the MINI less.
While the MCS does have 2 or three known problems, all are relatively rare, and except for the lag under 2k rpm, completely fixable at no cost to you.
When you compare the out-of-pocket expenses between owning a G35 (one word: brakes!) and an MCS, I think you'll love it even if it does go to the dealership once or twice - again, completely FOC!

How could you debate between an Mc and and MCS works. That would be like debating whether to have your seaside vacation in Atlantic City or St. Tropez.Don't listen to us crybabies, get the MCS.If your serious about bad weather driving,be certain to order DSC.
I've always enjoyed these..."this vs. that".... threads.
I bought my MCS because it was there.
I drove....
I liked it....
I bought it....
The 1st sales rep said ....."I can probably have one for you in approx 6 months". I was laughing as I was walking out the door.
Two weeks later..... I was driving my MCS.
As I've mentioned in earlier posts ...if I had to wait for one, I would not currently own one.
I didn't know this site existed this until...after I purchased my MCS.
This site has a great cross section of terrific people who are in various stages of MINI..... euphoria/depression.
(my best unscientific split would be 90%/10%)
Follow your gut...
All 3 choices are ...valid
(in a thunderous voice)
Choose..... door #1 , #2 or #3
Your call !!!!
Peace,
D

>>>>People make a big deal out of tiny little things. I have an August 2002 build and I have not had any of the stumble problems and only a minor cold start problem (takes like 1/2 a second longer to start...woo big problem there) and very minor yo yo problem (happens only in very specific situations and it is very minor). The car still runs and drives better than most new cars I've owned and is certainly more fun.

>>You're not making a big deal out of it because with your car it IS a little thing. Try one of the ones which has the stumble so bad that passengers' heads are thrown forward and the nose of the car drops as if the driver had suddenly hit the brakes. All while traffic is bearing down on them. Or try my car. Although they did fix the stumble, my Service Engine Soon light has come on 5 times in 2 months. Do you think those are little things? If you do then by all means, let's trade. We'll see how you like it and how you feel when someone on one of these forums talks as if you don't know what you're talking about.
shkeller55,
What I meant by little things was that the number of cars that have these problems to an extent that really causes a problem is little (percentage wise, compared to the number on the road). The stumble you talk about is probably because the old software causes the AST/DST to over compensate for chirped tires. From what I've seen the MINI is a pretty high quality car and there are few (again, percentage wise) with problems as major as yours. Sorry about the tough luck, hope it improves. In the mean time take a chill pill and don't attack me so viciously just because you're pissed you got a lemon.

Yup, Infiniti blew it on the G35 brakes, at least where longevity is concerned. My front pads were gone at 15,000 miles and I do not drive the car that hard. Other than that, the car has been flawless, the finest I have ever owned. Even with the brake issue, if I had to replace it tomorrow I would get another one (six-speed this time) because there is nothing on the market I like quite as much in the performance sedan world.

orbhot: No hard feelings then, but for future reference, you must understand - I can only see what you wrote, not what you meant. There's no way anyone would interpret what you wrote any differently. A "little thing" is commonly interpreted as something unimportant. My response to you was appropriate and was because I was specifically angry with you, not Mini USA. Mini USA, as well as my dealer, knows these things are indeed important. Whether they can fix them is another issue.
