R50/53 Air Bag Warning Light
Air Bag Warning Light
This is my first post.
I'm the happy owner of an '02 S model. Fun car to drive. While backing down my steep driveway I got two wheels stuck in the mud. It took me several attempts/stalls to extricate out of the muck. Since then the air-bag warning light on the speedo is on. Is there a reset button that will reset this or do I need to go to the dealer, nearest being 50 miles away?
Thanks in advance for your answers. I'm learning a lot about the Mini from this site and it's inhabitants.

The airbag light is a known issue. I am bringing my 2002 in on Saturday to get it fixed (Lights been on for over a year). They extended the warranty to 10 years - 150,000 miles on the airbag resister issue.
Thanks for responding Jeffc, you're a good son. I'm headed for Century Mini in Greenville, SC this morning to have 'em look at the light. I'm cranked up on Panamanian highlands coffee and ready for who knows what level of b--l s--t
the dealer will try to unload on me. I may have to tweak his ear a bit if he gives me any attitude.

This is a known issue. Mine has been on for a couple of weeks now and I've been doing my research. Lucky for Mini US owners they extended the warranty:

I'm up in Canada and it seems like we don't get those same benefits.
Good luck.

They will only warranty it if it is the wiring harness....Mine has been replaced/reset 3 times now..
It's been on for about a year and I like to look at the red light on the dash...
Just one of those wonderful MINI quirks...

My pristine Mini is parked in front of the showroom window, and after explaining the purpose of my visit, the service advisor, while looking at the car, asks if it has been in an accident. I asked, "does it look like it's been in a head on collision to you?". I was then informed that there are over 40 different trouble codes and that only three apply to the light being illuminated. If the problem is anything else I will be billed for the diagnostic. This didn't make me very happy. When asked about functionality of the air bag system he wasn't sure if the air bag would deploy if I chose to drive head on into a brick wall over my anguish about the little red light on my dash. Service advisors can sometimes be worthless little weasels. To be continued.
Just to add numbers to the airbag light issue (misery loves company), my '03 Cooper S had this issue within 6 months of purchase and this website has been key to not losing my sanity. Unfortunately 3 different dealerships and 4 evaluations have not fixed the problem, although one technician relayed that this wiring issue will not compromise airbag deployment. On a side note, a detailer removed my seats for a cleaning and the light has been on since (1.5 years). So at least I know its a good quality light behind the dash...
