Problems are why industry created The Warranty.

The Warranty is not necessarily a bid for confidence by the auto manufacturer, as many believe.

The Warranty is in place because manufacturers understand that--with any new car--if there are going to be major, silly problems, they are going to occur within the first ____ miles.

I speculate that the majority of MINI owners on this board are still under The Warranty, as MINI is a *new* car, in addition to being a new car. So the "new* car company is still working out the production/engineering bugs while the new cars are working out general sutomotive bugs. It's like a double whammy.

Finally--perhaps most importantly, so listen carefully-- our friends and relatives are sick of listening to us ponder every little cough and lurch eminating from our precious babies, so we gotta find a new audience. Who better than other people with fed-up friends and relatives?

>>I know what I want in a car.
>>
>>I want a car that I spend close to $30,000 on, not to break everyday.
>>
>>All the problems Ive heard about this car are based on what you people have said. All that information comes from these boards. You've said it....not me.
>>
>>Listening to all of you is funny. You act like this car is the second coming of Christ. Like if Im not in love with and worship the car, I dont deserve one.
>>
>>Its a freakin car. Its gonna be a grocery getter for my girlfriend and a putt putt mobile for me to haul stuff to and from the shop where I work on my bikes.
>>
>>You read these boards and its this broke, that broke, lemon law this, lemon law that.
>>
>>Before you go jumpin down my throat, maybe you should read the pages on this board and listen to what the members of this site have to say about the car. They make it sound like a cheap piece of crap. People that are interested in a MINI will come to this site to learn about it. They will only learn what you put up on these pages. What you guys put up on these pages isnt very flattering.
>>
>>percentages is key here. i have an S since 11/2 and not aproblem. some of us here has had problems, it only stands out because somehow its being highlighted. well, for example by people like you. also, take into account that some problems is somewhat related to some sort of MODS,MODS that arent proven to be reliable. AND, do you really think that theres a car that is trouble free, not a glitch? before buying my S i owned a 2002 SI. few problems i encountered, needle on speedometer shakes so much it reminds me of the stationary bike i bought at a garage sale. dealer installed fog light (left) fell off, hatch wont close right (open warning sign) seatbelt was problematic. if you read a lot of car magazine, specially the long term test section. theres hardly any car tested that has not a problem in them.

>>I guess Im just used to some of the motorcycle boards Ive belonged to. We didnt talk about problems alot because we didnt have many. Most talk was about performance mods, riding styles, racing and so on.

I don't follow any motorcycle boards, but I?m not surprised. I think that, except for the folks that ride big cruisers cross-country, there's less of an expectation for durability in bikes. Most riders ride for fun. They know they'll ride their bikes hard, maybe go down a time or two, modify the heck out of them, and see them break from time to time.

Automobiles are more often considered essential primary transportation. I think problems, when they occur, may get more attention because of this.

Then there's the MINI... The motor's only a few hundred cc's bigger than my bike, and its pulling a lot more weight with pretty good performance. What expectation for durability should I have? I expect the see the end of the warranty with few major problem, and am prepared for ongoing maintenance, and maybe a rebuild at 5 yr.?s, unless another vehicle that puts a bigger smile on my face comes along.

Anyway, you've taken some pretty negative criticism, pretty well. Good luck with your MINI. I hope you enjoy it as much as I'm enjoying mine.

Punisher,

You have yet to receive your MCS, perhaps disillusioned would be a better choice of words than disappointed. If the odds (and the gods) are in your favor, you can expect a relatively trouble free, reliable MCS, as almost all of us have. Think of a MCS as a $20K M3, lots of performance, but in the final analysis, the its just a big engined, entry level BMW. Will it pamper you like a 5 or 7 series? No, it won't. Will it have the level of refinement one expects from a German car? Yes, even though (or because) it is assembled in England. The quality of the plastics, the design of the interior, the drivetrain, all are on a par with Germany's best. I find the car superior to Japanese and American vehicles in the same price range. For me the closest competitor is a German built GTI, or an Austrian built A-4. But neither of these are MINIs. I suggest, that you lighten up a little, and enjoy the wait for your MCS. It will be worth it.
