R50/53 My First Drive
After my first real motoring experience since I've gotten my Mini, I took my first real drive, then emailed my friend. He said it was such a great letter that I should post it here so here it is:
Well finally, I motored.
This was the longest week in history. There ought a be a law, no Mini deliveries on Mondays. Too long till the weekend, tired from looking at, hoping all others will look at, making sure no one accidently touches it, or god forbid, scratches it. A lot of energy goes into "holding the space" around the great Mini. Gosh it's exhausting. The weekend finally gets here, sleep that's all I want. Can't wait to get up and make sure it's still in the garage, like it got up and went out on it's own. This is weird, did this happen to you? Is this monkey pox? You bit me and I bit this other guy, and this is how this disease is passed around? Can't stand it if there's a spot of water on it, bugs forget it! I bought a wash mitt, a chenille soap sponge, a car vac, flannel towels, special soap for washing, a duster for the dash, a chamois, and was given as a baby gift, a finishing spray with a micro fiber towel for after you commit suicide for being so insane. At least I'm laughing, it's good medicine.
Anyway I finally went on a drive, you should pardon the expression, for about 3 hours. I was going to head out on 101 North, but that jammed so I went 170 to 5 to 118 to 101 to Kanan to Malibu. Stopped for coffee in the Malibu Colony, I was rockin. I had a CD from NPR the Sound of Noise, it's electronic, Debussy. It was inspiring, I've never listened to it. I had no destination, just to go in the direction I was going. This was my first real experience of the car, I was moved to tears. I met a yellow S on the 118, we were screaming at about 90, pretty much along with everyone else, and they gave me the piece sign just when the music hit a crescendo, it was too much. Both windows open, the top open, the music blasting, and a little Mini dancing. Me and the yellow S got in line with each other, and kept the pace. One leading then moving over and the other going ahead, it was all pretty mystical. We did this from the beginning of the 118 all the way to the 101, when they went North, and I went South. Of course I put my hand up through the sun roof opening and waved goodbye, it was moving, touching and reminiscent.
I'm glad I was alone for my first experience, no one to ask or talk to, just me and a beautiful little car. What can I say Geoff, I'm a happy camper. I'm glad I've got you to share this with, wouldn't want to do that alone.
Well now back to work tomorrow, but there are lots of weekends in my future, and I'm thrilled I bought this car, it's something else.
With love,
A Mini Maniac

I understand exactly what your going through on the emotional/protective feelings your having about your MINI. I just got mine a few days ago. I was crying just a little on my way to meet up with the truck driver, I almost hugged him I was so happy. And so far, I can't stand to see her (Pooky JR.) dirty. I love my MINI and I know you do too.
Have fun and welcome to the family.

Welcome to the tribe Pookie,
I took delivery on a friday afternoon, pure bliss. I can commiserate with you on a monday delivery though, it must have been painful to wait out those days.
