R50/53 Broken DME

Broken DME
My 2006 JCW MCS failed to start the other day. Apparently the 'EWS' is dead. (Originally they said is was a 'DME'). That's a unit, they say, in the steering column that talks to the key, and is coded to the VIN.
Because of the coding the replacement part has to be requested from Germany, which means 1 to 2 weeks waiting.
I've not heard of this problem before. Have you?
