We test drove an S on a cloudy day, so we didn't get a chance to really see how the sun roof blocks sun since the screen isn't a normal sun roof cover. You know? It has the perforated shade; I just wonder how hot it will make a car on a sunny day - especially since they all come standard with black leatherette and my office doesn't have a garage or carports or anything.

I went for the no - sunroof for the first time in MANY cars. I think the sunroof takes away from the look of the car. I have chili red w/ white roof - I also like the black roof w/ other colors...My 2 cents

I have a Pure Silver MINI with black roof and sunroof. I'm out here in Salt Lake City where it is plenty sunny and hot. I have had no problems with glare or sun coming through the sunroof.

Hope that helps

HA: Are you saying no sun actually comes into the cabin thru the perforated screen?...or just minimal sun? I too am curious as I easily saw the light above the sunroof screen when I sat in the S in the showroom. If it were direct sunlight, I question how well it blocks the light. How close is the end result to a true sunroof cover (e.g. no light, minimal light/heat, something I can bear w/ cuz I love the Mini, etc.)? Thanks.

I have the same concerns. Snoopy at the mini2 forum wrote this:

"Assuming that Webasto use the same glass on their OEM and aftermarket sunroofs.
The glass is called Venus and it keeps out UV rays and heat (99% UV filtered, 95% heat protections). So their web site tells me. "

Thanks for the feedback, Fledge! I didn't think about the actual glass on the sunroof. Anyone else have any feedback?

Yes, some light does get through the sunroof. But it isn't direct sunlight. The sparse sunroof cover reflects the light enough where the light can't nail you in the eyes.

Yes, I've driven the MINI in mucho sunny weather out here in the high desert. It hasn't bothered me at all so far.

Ive got the sunroof here in sunny Southern California and I think the pull shade does a fine job of cutting down the rays on those really hot days. Ive been driving with it open more often than not and I absolutely love it.

I've got a Silver Cooper with a black roof in France and I have no problems in direct sunlight. The black roof is a wonderful combination with the double sunroof because outsiders do not neccisarily see that there is a sunroof. The glass is tinted the same color as the roof. Great Anti-theft. And with the standard BMW guard, the wind is brilliantly dispersed over the car instead of in your face!

All in all, I would strongly recommend the sunroof. It opens up the car completely. With the enormous windows and the sunroof, you would almost think you were in a convertible.

Glad to hear that. I'm giving up a 99 Miata for my silver with white roof Cooper S (sport and premium pkg). I was wondering if I was going to miss the top down.

Have to disagree with previous comments..
I have had my Mini for about a month now; I live in Florida and in mid-summer the sunroof lets in too much light/heat for me. I had the sunroof tinted along with the windows two weeks ago, and it is a tremendous improvement. A Rep called me from Mini on monday asking for my input on the car and I let him know that a solid shade (as opposed to the stock semitransparent one) would be much appreciated in the 2003 models.

I would have to agree with JohnW...our Cooper a/c struggles to stay cool on days above the 90 degree mark. The sunscreen is not effective enough in my opinion for hotter climates.

I guess living in Jville Florida I will need to get my windows tinted. More money, oh well I'm sure the car looks tuff with the tint.

I ordered my mini with the sunroof, but had the same concerns about the shades-- maybe they will come out with solid replacement shades-- seems like an easy fix, especially for in a hot climate

I haven't really noticed a problem here in South Florida (where we've had a considerable amount of rain and cloud cover recently) aside from the slight distraction of light induced pimples on my arm! When the sky has been clear, the screen/sunroof does an admirable job at keeping the heat out of the cabin.

I can't believe that I didn't think about that living hear in the desert of Arizona. Oh well the best time of the day to drive is early in the moring or when the sun goes down. This is the first car I'll own with a sun roof. Live and learn. My 'S' is strictly for pleasure, no need to drive it when the sun is baking everything.

I have a sunroof on my silver standard cooper and I love the fact that you do not see it at all against the black roof. It is cool how it opens up and the opening is so big - I wouldn't go without this option.

However the sun is sometimes too much with the roof open and just the shade. Although with the shade drawn and roof tilted, not opened, it is just fine here in CA.

I agree that solid shade is better - they should give us the part whane they come up with it nest year. The mesh shade feels flimsy and I do not know how long it will last, since the edges flap in the wind when the roof is down.

Man, and you know Mississippi is just as hot as Florida. I just ordered my S w/the sunroof. Oh well...I'll have a garage and well, maybe I'll just put a cool little hanky over the sunshade during the summer

Sunshade question. Does the sunshade retract lengthtwise (front to back) or
widthwise(left to right)

thanks

I ended up with the sunroof because it came with the Premium Pkg, but I didn't plan on it as part of my wants & wishes. Since I bought a Cooper that was very close to my original plan, and was available in a hurry, I ended up with a leather interior as well. I've had sunroofs a coupla time before, including the original huge Webasto cloth one, without a sunshade, mind you, and I found that driving in AZ it could be a pretty hot experience.

I feel that the life of a leather interior is shortened somewhat by a sunroof that's open a lot. I'm going for the tint as long as I'm tinting the windows, too. That will help with the temperature factor, and help the leather last. The sunshade works pretty well, but on my recent trip to Arizona, there were times the sun shone exactly thru an open spot in the weave, and I wore a hat just to keep the glare outta my eyes. This only happened once or twice, and overall I really like the big MINI sssunroof. I have the Auto Air, and it makes all the difference in keeping the passengers cool. In So Cal it's like being in a ragtop, almost.

And there are two sun-shades...
From the outside it appears to be one large sunroof, but on the inside it is actually separated into a front and rear sunroof.

In my Cooper, the rear sun-shade does not stay closed very well, either. Whenever I hit a bump in the road it flies open. No problems with the front one yet. I plan to ask them to look at it the next time I go by the dealership...
