how to disable aftermarket alarms?
hey guys,
my gf has a honda and we lost the one and only remote to the car. it's an aftermarket alarm, probably by pursuit or viper or something, the kind that arms itself after like 2 minutes. the car has been sitting in our garage for weeks and it's frustrating. i know, this is dumb. i'm thinking of opening it w/ the key, pop the hood, and disconnect the battery to shut off the alarm. then what? i'm assuming it's very difficul to disable myself? or is it? should i just tow it to best buy or whatever shop that installs (and hopefully unintalls) alarms?
thoughts? thanks!

Does it have its own horn or use the car horn?
If it uses the car horn, look up in a manual (find one online) where the fuse is for the horn. Open the door, pop the fuse. If that dont work, unscrew the neg post to the battery
Is this the kind that "immobolizes" the car? If so, I guess you need to tow it someplace, I'm guessing. Its going to be wired somehow into the ignition so better let the the pros do it.

Do you know where the 'valet' button or toggle is? If so most alarms deactivate when you either hold the button or flip the toggle and then turn the ignition to the 'ON' position. If not disconecting the battery will at least shut it up. If you have to go this route pull the lower dash panel off and post a pick of the wiring underneather and I can tell you what wires to cut and reconnect so that the car will run. Then you can either remove it or get a new remote coded to it.
+1 on the valet - it will be a small black button or a toggle normally under the dash, in the kick panel or steering column. Since you said it has the generic horn sound, the alarm is probably a Viper/DEI/Hornet/Don'tJackmyS*** variant. Alpine and Clifford have distinct sounds and that's not it.

yes, but a Subaru Legacy GT.
Starter interrupt = ok. It it fails, the car won't start (no big deal unless you are in a bad area and need to GTFO). Ignition interrupt = BAD! If it fails the car shuts off....as in a possible failure while you need the car running...passing a car with an 18 wheeler coming in the opposite direction and the engine konking out on you isn't safe.
AFAIK, only Clifford did an ignition interrupt - they built it with a fail-safe or fail-open type setup. If it did go bad, it wouldn't shut you down. Still....at my old shop, we never set that feature up unless the customer specifically requested it and signed a waiver.

Damn, skippy. We always did the same thing in my shops too. Used to love it when the first gen of the new Clifford ACE alarms came out with the igintion interupt and they would freeze up and I'd have a tow truck pulling up to the bay for alarm brain replacement. Then they got bought out by DEI and became just another brand for them.
