Another GTI vs MCS comparo..by a 20 y.o. enthusiast

I think the GTI is an AWESOME car, but I still dont see it as a viable alternative to the MINI. It's more of a "really fun to drive daily driver" while the Cooper S has something extra.
Of course, that doesnt mean anything. I already said I'm considering trading mine in for the new TT....so I'm guilty as well.

Much as I enjoy the Mini it is not perfect, it is a balance of strengths and weaknesses and I know there are other cars that have a lot to offer too. Honestly it is just a matter of time before trying another one. (If I sold the M Coupe, a truly unique and limited car, really nothing is untouchable.)

Exactly, all of my cars have had something extra in my opinion

having a car for each purpose.
what do you guys think about cargo space between the GTI 4 door with
child seats mounted vs the new G35sedan with child seats mounted?
im sure the GTI can fit bulky things but perhaps the G35sedan might offer
more volume (?)

mmmmmmmmm very nice. oh crap, now i got another car
i need to think about.
i need to think about.
To each his/her own of course - I'd be curious to hear your back to back comparison if you do test a similarly equipped GTI/A3. Another consideration you might want to check into is how your local VW and Audi service departments stack up, how people like them and the status of loaners and such. In looking into it a bit around here I definately found differences that favored Audi fwiw.
one more gratuitous pic for the heck of it

I see the GTI, especially the 5 door, as more of a replacement for your Civic. The MCS is unique, and not much like anything else you currently own. The GTI is a comfortable daily driver that does basically everything your Civic can do, but better. Maybe it's not QUITE as reliable, but I've read that they're pretty good in that respect. Plus, if it does need to go in the shop at some point, you have other cars you can drive (that most people use as daily drivers). The Civic is the car you spend most of your time in, yet its the only one that has no character at all. That sacrifice is really worth it to you? Just so you dont have to wash your cars as often?
Again, not seeing the point of owning a Civic, and NOT being mean. I just think you might regret it in the future.

+1, having a car that's limited is what makes car ownership fun, imho.

Awe c'mon, Ken.
I can't be the only person than thinks it would be odd to have a beater car for a GTI. I have never heard of someone having a VW as a "toy." Its a fast economy car, that's it.
Why would you want to drive a Civic to work when the GTI or MCS sitting in your garage can do the job just as well..and save you money?
Seems a bit obssessive to me.

kinda cool to have either one though although about $12k difference.
wat you loose on the G35sedan, you gain on the GTI and vise versa.
i can get the GTI now or wait until the civic's done and get either
the GTI, A3, or the G35sedan...while keeping both my G35C and MCS.
more options if i wait.

I'd say wait. The GTI would be a pointless purchase. You have the Civic for your commute, and a Cooper S for fun. The only thing the GTI does better than the MCS is being a better daily driver. Since you have the Civic, the GTI would not be your daily driver anyway, so why bother.
That was my suggestion...the Civic is a waste of money. When you own 3 other very liveable cars, you dont need a commuter.
Next, you're saying you may get a G35 sedan, yet keep your G35 coupe? Why would you want two of the same vehicle? Doesn't make sense. Your wife has the practical car, and the G35 coupe is also practical (seats 4, fairly large). How many cars that serve the same purpose do you need?
I also wouldnt get a GTI/A3 if you're keeping the MINI. Again too similar.
I'd dump the Civic and the G35C....and get a Lexus IS350 or the G35 sedan. They're both reliable, practical, and also fun. Either one would be just as good a commuter as the Civic. I'd then just keep the MCS as the toy. Later on you could replace it with a sporty little roadster or some other cool weekend ride.

For what its worth, although the A3 was also a hatch I did not find it any more similar to the Mini then, say, a 3 series - although I am primarily thinking of the 3.2 IMHO in any configuration it is simply a different type of car.
PS: Evos and STis are just 'fast economy cars' too but some people keep them as 'toys' (And actually many would say the Mini is just a not so fast economy car... )

on the weekends as a grocery getter type car and probably won't
use it in the winter until the civic is gone. the civic is on a lease
that actually wiped out my previous leased civic that was returned
early. if i buy-out now i loose money on it. if i use it until the end
of term, i actually get out of 2 leases without any penalty ....
actually even if it was only for the current civic it was still an
excellent deal! once the civic is gone, i would use the GTI as
my primary daily driver.
The MCS and G35C are my fun cars. neither one is really practical
for daily use imho and that is fine.
im probably going to hold-off on the GTI at least until i see what
the next G37C looks like in April.

mods of $6-7k (lowering and wheels). so im looking at spending about $45k
total.
#68
The Cooper is more of an economy car, the Cooper S is on the line. When I called the GTI an economy car, thats not what I really intended. The Rabbit is an economy car, the GTI..not so much.
It's a nice car, just not nice enough to require a Civic beater. The two cars are more similar than they are different. That was my point.

hah haa
BTW, S3 will never ever make it to US shores
After tweaking the GTI, i really dont miss my MINI at all . Oh, and I eat G35s alllllll dayyyyyy longgggg (which is not a fair comparison, because i have couple of mods under the hood- seeee no more bonnets ).
#74
Now this I do not understand.
Serious question. Why isnt the MCS suitable for everyday. I am just assuming you must commute somewhere, pick up groceries, or whatever?
Same question on the G35
#75
you can use it for everyday if you'd like. for me, i like to have more
convenience of a 4dr or more especially carrying kids around and needing
to use it to carry stuff without getting the child seat out. the MCS is
a lot better than the G35C in terms of cargo space but not much better
in terms of carrying people around. also, have you ever looked at a
G35C's trunk? we call it a rear glove box. not that it matters,
cause i only carry my spare tire and some misc items in there anyway.
also i dont like driving MT's to work everyday nor like getting scatches
or dings on my hobby cars, don't like water stains dont like bird crap, etc.
you can either squeeze everything into one car and make the best of it
or you can spread it out and let each car do its own thing with margin
to spare. and i choose to do the latter. basically im using my cars how
i want to use it and that's that.
i also don't like down time... one goes bad, i have one repaired while
i play with the other.
