H2s. Are they really that bad?
H2s. Are they really that bad?
My mother and I are looking for a vehicle to replace our landrover with. I have looked around and have found the following:
Mercedes ML 500: In order to get the price we want, its an 02 with no warranty.
BMW X5: Not bad, but my mother doesn't "love" the way it looks.
Hummer H2: Still has warranty, and it pretty reliable. (C'mon. Its a chevey.)
We can probably get $18k traded in, for the 2003 Landrover discovery. The H2 is a 2003 Hummer H2 with 45k miles. They are asking $32,xxx. That means, for the first time, she would have payments of about 400/month for 3 years.
Is there anything that I am missing? For some of the people that have had an H2, was it a practicle vehicle?
Thank you.

How about a base Porsche Cayenne?
The base cayenne starts at a similar price as the base X5, and is not as expensive as the ML500.
We've owned two (an S which was traded in for a turbo) and they are very nice cars.

I know that the cayenne is a nice vehicle, but its just a tad pricey.
My trade in is worth about $20k, and we don't want to finance more than $10k.
Gas millage is not an issue.

What do you guys need a SUV for?
Personally I think the infiniti SUV's are the best, best looking and performing for the price if you supercharge the V6 one.
most of the people who buy these type of vehicles don't even need the room or the sport utility part of the vehicle, plus they are a pain to park, not to mention the environmental impacts they have. I think SUV's and trucks are fine if you need them for work, off road fun, or for carrying around copious amounts of garbage, other wise i think they are freakin stupid!
If you need the cargo room i would get one of the sportier SUV's like an infiniti, they get better mpg's then the clunky hummers and are more pleasant to drive.

Get it all out. Its a great place get all the bashing out in a single thread so we can find the truly horrible cars

What's wrong with the Landrover? Get a Landrover Defender, the ultimate SUV. I wouldn't do the H2 cause you'd probably save money in all respects if you just got a Tahoe.

*****, we need an SUV. There are 5 of us, and....well....we just do. Period.
Motor on, we've had the landrover for 3 years now, and we are approaching the end of our warranty. We would prefer to not own it after that. We both LOVE the defender, but we would need a 110, which is extremley expensive...from what I hear.

How is gas milage NOT an issue?? Gas is THE issue, for the world...
If she wants 400 a month and an H2, that will turn into 600 a month.
My recomendation...
Get a used 2003 Infinit FX35. Much more fun to drive, better cargo room than the X5 and the ML, better handling than all of them, and a 280hp V6 that gets 24 on freeway and I averaged about 18.5.
AWD is standard, they are easy to find for 30K, they have a MUCH better interiors than the H2, ultra reliable, and MUCH MUCH MUCH better resale.
Ok, well since I have had a vehicle at Aristocrat motors so long, they have offered me $1k off any vehicle on their lot.
They have one 2003 HUMMER H2 with 30k miles. (Its very rare for Aristocrat to have one.)
My MINI dealership is right down the road, so while she's getting her oil changed, we're gonna swing by.
The only problem is that its a boring color. Pewter.
Oh well. I'll let you all know what we do.

Oh, but wait, they aren't "cool".

I have to say I find it interesting that "gas mileage is not an issue", yet you don't want to finance more than 10K. Do you work for one of the oil companies, and get a huge employee discount or something?
For what it's worth, to add to the others comments on it, the Infinity FX35 appears (to me) to be one of the more "car-like" SUVs on the road. Although I haven't driven one myself, I have ridden in one, and I was impressed at how stable it felt (for an SUV).
The FX35 is a nice vehicle, but there are 2 problems.
First, we dont "love" the look of the FX35. Yes, its a very nice vehicle. But, there is a large difference between that and the H2. Please dont flame me for this, but we want a big SUV. I am sorry if I sound un-ethical, but thats what we want. We have a house in colorado that we go to for vacation. It on an 80 acre lot with terrain that the Infiniti just couldnt handle.
Second, we need the 3rd row seating. I know its just one seat, but thats what we need.
The FX35 is probably second on my list. Then the ML, then the X5. We're still deciding, but the H2 fits what we want and need.

Unfortounate, but true.
Yes, that would be ideal, but not gonna cut it. We do off road for recreation, and we also tow quite often. We have even though about towing the MINI out there. (I have no idea how me would get it down the road, but we'll figure it out.) I, nor my mother work for and oil company. There is nothing out there that will get worse gas milage than my Discovery. I averaged 9 MPG cruising at 75 MPH on I-70 for 600 Miles. So, anything better would be suffice.
The BMW X5 doesn't have third row seating, just an FYI.....atleast none of the ones I have been in.
Haha....yes, there definitely is

.Well, I mean in the full sized SUV market. Not 50ft + Tractor trailers carrying 100 cows! lol
Why would you want a used Hummer? For the money you are going to cough up you could buy one of many brand new SUV's on the market that would have full warranty, satisfy your needs, & look cool to boot.
I mean if you get a Hummer people will be out there trying to hump it all the time & here's a good example of the off-road capabilities of a Hummer

To answer the question raised in the title: yes.
Awful handling, terrible visibility, crap mileage, shoddy construction. And I happen to like GM vehicles. Sorry guys, but there's s good reason you're losing market share to Toyota and pretty much everyone else.
If you must have an SUV, the new Volvo is actually pretty nice. Good Luck!

They are very capable, proven drivetrain.. What it lacks in refinement, it makes up for with brute torque and off-road capabilities. It rides nice on the Hwy and doesn't feel too big. It's also unique and parts/service are reasonable... unlike the Euro's.
It's the real deal... well.. almost...

Oh, and if some idiot humps my/my moms hummmer, they be hearin' from the Leawood Police. Muahhahahaha. MUAAAHAHAHHA. lol There arent too many hooligans out here, so Im willing to risk that part.
I was unable to view that vid. Was that the one where he poped the tie rod? That was just a fluke. I dont think that would have happened to every hummer.

terrible visibility: Do you mean rear, frontal, or what?
crap mileage: 14 in the city is better the the 9 that I get on the HWY
shoddy construction: Its a tahoe. There are more tahoes in Lewood than there are blades of grass. My father has even owned one. It was a fantastic vehicle. Never in the shop.
A volvo/toyota: They're on the bottom half of my moms "cool factor."
They had some as part of the Avis rental fleet and I got two as free upgrades, what a POS. They are simply poorly designed, uncomfortable and really a poor excuse for a SUV. The one thing that drove me nuts was that I had to use my right hand to lower the windows down. The armrest has the controls so far back that your left hand can't get to them without being in a wierd position. I think there are a lot of other good choices out there for your mom, Audi A6 wagon, Lexus etc. Just my humble $0.02 worth.

It a powerful work horse that'll get worked to the frame rails.
