put a cup with 1/3 to 1/2 full of water in your cup holder and drive though the
canyons without spilling it from your turns.

The Ferrari clip was just plain scary. The roadway looked like the same one used in the opening scene of the original Italian Job movie.

In somewhat the Ferrari driver is a bad driver, but then you have to admit even though he made some mistakes he still kept it on the road and not going off the side of the Hill .

Also gotta remeber its RWD and mucho HP.

I think I've seen the Ferrari driver driving various cars on the Dragon.

Let make it more challenging, an open crate of tofu and water in the boot, as well!

Be smooth!

I only watched the Ferrari flick. All over the road, over rotating the rear end, but the funky steering wheel... do you have to not let go in order to shift? But the low traffic count is more amazing!

NO. Those were paddle shifters. The car can shift gears much faster than any human being can

The same is true on the new 2007 997TT. The 0-60 times are siginifcantly faster using the paddles than a manual.

^^ is it really the human factor or is the construction of the clutch
completely different? i think it is more of a mechanical issue than
the human factor.

The DSG has two clutches, one always ready for the next shift.

I think its both. The human being has to always be involved and being humans, we make errors. We have to clutch in, move the lever, clutch out remembered when and where to do it.

The DSG uses computers, that never () makes mistakes, wont even let you blow the engine with a bad downshift. Computer always win.

If you read here Stick Shift RIP

The day F1 racing cars switched to paddle shift control, the clutch pedal was doomed

DSG rules– to the point where the clutch pedal and traditional manual gearbox is a mechanical redundancy, a dead device shifting. In fact, any car manufacturer who doesn't have a DSG or something similar installed in their performance-oriented products will soon be at a tremendous disadvantage.

Death to the Stick Shift

Bottom line, you want to have fun and be involved, drive a manual

You want to be fast, get paddles

That needs a modification... I agree, but ONLY in the case of DSG/SMG automatics. The traditional "slushbox" automatic transmissions are terrible, IMO... and you can get paddles with those too - look no further than our very own MCSa. When I want to shift... I want to shift NOW, not when a computer decides to agree with me (which always seems to be well after I made the decision and provided the input). The only automatics I will come to appreciate and accept are ones that don't override or delay your input (provided, of course, that your input isn't damaging to the car).

Automatic transmissions can't see the road ahead, and until we have computer imaging as part of the equation, the most efficient way to handle the shifting duties (i.e. being in the BEST gear for the situation, at any given time) will be to keep that control in the hands of the driver... either via a manual transmission or via no delay shift paddles, such as those tied to DSG/SMG automatics.

Thats what we were talking about ... DSG. In fact Porsche just bought controlling interest in VW http://www.porsche.com/usa/aboutpors...&id=2006-06-23 to get this ... http://www.hvwc.org/html/modules.php...rder=0&thold=0

Yes, but your statement wasn't specific enough... it's important to be specific when saying something like that, especially when there are "paddle shifter" slushbox automatics available too. The author of that "death to the stick shift" piece didn't make that distinction either (nor do I think he was trying)... which is why I think it was asinine. However, the author of the "stick shift RIP" piece made a lot more sense.

The paddle shifting thing in this thread was only a discussion of the Ferrari paddles ... which use their own variation of DSG (see the VW article). My other post only talked about DSG and nothing else ... I never referenced any other kind but I guess you could imply the discussion was about other kinds.

The article you didn't like is over two years old, an editorial. The new article was the other one.

My implication came especially because you linked to an article that didn't make the distinction at ALL. The asinine one. Yes, the older one.

Yes, I was fully aware how old it is. Doesn't change my opinion that it was short-sighted then and still is today. The newer one (again, I was aware that it was written this year) was much more sensible. I thoroughly enjoyed the recent comments made after the older one though. Heh.

I remember very vividly that road along Tuscany's countryside. very beautiful, and I must concure, he is a bad driver. One thing you must remember is, in Italy, EVERYONE utilizes the full road.

P.S. If you see an Italian plate that has the words Venice on it, then look the heck out. Some of the worst drivers around!
