Has your car been broken into?

Have you ever had a car broken into? (Not stolen just broken into) ...

I have twice ...

1965 Mustang someone stole the 8 track tape deck
1984 Porsche 944, someone stole the Escort Radar Detector hidden under the seats Broken glass everywhere .... what a mess.

Sophomore year in college, many moons ago. My dad and I stopped in NYC to visit my brother, who lived in Brooklyn Heights at the time. Absolutely nothing left showing in the car. Came back to the apartment after a day in Manhattan, the trunk was completely cleared out. Everything I owned was gone. Musta been the out of state plates.

Of course, being a college sophomore, everything I owned fit in the trunk of the car.

I used to own a 91 Civic Si the car was broken into 3 times and the stereo was taken everytime, including once while in for service at the dealer. Several weeks after stealing the stereo they came back and stole the car.

Guess they needed a place to install the stereo.

My '82 VW Rabbit was broken into three times. The vent windows were broken
both times. First time I replaced the fixed vent windows with the pivoting
ones that open. First time a radar detector was stolen, second time
they boogered up the dash trim trying to get the radio out unsuccessfully,
third time nothing was stolen, but the doors were left open and the battery
was dead.

I had an Astro van with a Jet Ski in the back. They stole the van, which I got back after a few days with some extra dents but with no Jet Ski. Got the Jet Ski back about a month later. In another instance I was diving in Hawaii and someone broke into the Nissan that we had. Don't think they stole anything but they damaged the door........

You feel violated...

Year ago my heavily modded '67 VW was stolen from a VW event at the old Orange County International Raceway. (If you ever raced there you're officially old - oops wrong thread) The police found it completely stripped 36 hrs later. Absolutely heartbreaking.

I then purchased another '67 VW. I installed a killer sound system and heavily modded the car. Two months after completion while parked in a security gated apartment complex in a nice area of San Diego the car was broken into and the sound system and alarm system I had installed to protect the car were stolen.

My Civic. I had a pretty nice stereo that was taken, but my insurance company repaired everything, including the destroyed dash from moron theives that don't know how to take a stereo out, and got me a better stereo. Didn't cost me a penny but still really sucked.

That car was cursed in every way possible.

Before the MINI, I drove such beaters that I would NEVER lock them. There wasn't anything valuable in my cars, no one would want to steal them, so I would rather save the broken glass and let them go right in if they wanted. Don't know if anybody ever did get into my vehicles, but if they did, I never noticed!

Early 90's I had a 1986 CRX Si that got broken into twice right in front of my townhouse. First time the took the head unit, a bazooka sub and my Serengeti sunglasses. Didn't leave a scratch. A few months later, I wake up to the sound of a gunshot, yelling and cracking wood. Woozy and unsure of what I'd just heard, I looked around then went back to bed.

A few minutes later red and blue lights are flashing through the windows. I peek out and three cops are in front of my door.

What happened was my neighbor across the parking lot was a cop. He saw the guys messing with my car, called the police, then watched them from the shadows, gun drawn. They spooked and bolted. He gave chase and one guy ran right THROUGH the wooden privacy fence in my backyard. He chased the other one who jumped into a car, and he fired a shot as the guy sped off!

They didn't get anything but they pulled out the hatch lock and broke the plastic taillight panel.

I just thought it was cool that there was gunplay over my car!

my honda civic, right in front of my house. window smashed with brick (from my neighbors left over construction), that went though with such force it cut my drivers seat. my interior frame backpack that i just got back from my friend was stolen, along with my dog's overnight bag that was filled with extra dog food and toys.

the theives also hit 3 other cars on my street that night. again, more bricks. i heard the alarm of the truck down the street at 3am. i got off easy - the trucks down the street had all windows broken and an owner lost her purse and laptop.

ooh - the cool part was the next morning when the police were called. they did the whole CSI thing on my car.

you can see the bricks in the background...

A long time ago - we owned a 68' MGB - had an alarm in it - somebody ATTEMPTED to get the radio out one night but we heard the alarm and got outside just in time to see the perp running down the street with a pillow case and luckily it was empty.. That's the only KNOWN attempted break in - in many years of motoring...

I broke into my previous car on several occasins, I knew how to do it without breaking (or damaging in any way) anything, and allowed my to get my CD out of the car without having to back into the house to get the keys, can be a real time saver.

No I didn't take the time to tell the ins. co. or report it to the police.

'85 Corolla -- broken into 3 or 4 times in 17 years of ownership. Way big bummer and hassle every time it happened, though the stereo I got out of the last theft was way better than the one the punks stole.

Someone broke into my '93 Mercury Topaz in broad daylight, while the car was parked within a block of a police station. They broke a passenger window and took a radar detector and CD player. Since I was in downtown Newark, NJ, I'm probably lucky I had a car to drive home at all.

I had an '88 Mazda 323 that was broken into twice...the first time, they stole the radio, speakers, and the parcel shelf that the speakers were mounted on. The second time, they just broke the glass.

When my brother was in school at UCLA many years ago, he drove a '79 Camaro. The car was broken into....

They took the 8-track tapes, but left the radio;
They took his notebooks, but not without tearing his notes out of them and leaving them;
They left his textbooks (probably the most expensive items in the car)...

Twice, both times they were after an aftermarket stereo. I no longer put aftermarket stereos in my cars.
