New Ads from VW
New Ads from VW
Remember how VW bought out Mini's adverting? well, here are some of the first ads. This is what VW probably needs to get back on track (plus fix some other issues; reliablity, dealership quality...)

What VW needs is to get their design team to finish the back of the GTi.
I think they styled the front end, looked at it, thought how great of a job they did, pat themselves on their back, and just simply forgot about the back.

Okay, so who are these ads targeted at? People who like Superfly movies and effect Hip Hop jargon and think that "scheisse" means the "schnitz" but who also know about the Autobahn and that it is in Deutschland and identify with German engineering but happen to like boring cars? This stuff was written by square peg people trying to be cool. Perhaps the German engineers had a say in the final copy. I think this ad agency will find out that the Mini had something to do with it's success and it wasn't all the advertising.
MTV........
ruined our language. Makes me think of that rap-star and Lee Iacoca ad... gee if it worked for them! Now throw in some Engrish?
It will take more than showing the same white GTI too!

Has everyone seen the series of commercial featuring "FAST" this black GTI rabbit??

And "Pretuned in Deutschland" is supposed to resonate?

Its funny, one of my VW friends who rode in a new GTi was like "its SO much faster than your JCW or whatever." Oh yeah? Well, I found the car weighs 3100 lbs, more than 500 than a loaded MINI Cooper S, and comes with 200 horsepower, 15 less than a JCW, and 25 less than a GP. And it has no LSD. And this is their NEW car, and its not even as fast as the old mini! If the new GTi isnt even as fast as the old mini, wait till the new one comes out!
And plus, like autoweek said, at the detroit auto show volkswagen handed out flyers to GTi owners to get them a free-ticket getaway from the cops....like, its really fast or something.

I think you may be underestimating the GTI. Stock GTI can go 0-60 in 6.7 with the DSG transmission. The car pull like crazy because of the 200+ torque at very low RPM. The car is so easy to drive fast. There is no need to floor it to the red line like you have to do on a MINI. GTI is a mod happy. With the same money on computer chip, GTI can make up to 30 hp and 40+ torque easily. People have been getting 280+hp with only chip+exhaust.
Yes, the car is heavier and doesn't look as unique as MINI, but in performance department GTI is one hell of a car.
just my 50cents

I guess if I still lived at home with my mom and she washed my dishes and clothes while I played video games. I would be impressed by these ads?
These ads prove that MINI was the winner of the two.

The ads are clever...not sure about the cars though.
Seems to me MINIs had a lot of angles which an advertiser could exploit, not just one. In the end, the fact that the car was so blasted good and that owners were so enthusiastic made the ads so very more potent.
I don't even think the performance card was played that often. Most people I know learned to respect and venerate MINI performance only on test drives and such.

VW's ProjectFast
In case you were wondering what happened to MINIs stellar marketing guru - the evidence is right here - http://www.projectfast.com - make sure you build a GTi and build it on vwfeatures.com - after you've built it.. make sure you take it for a joyride. A BRILLANT confabulator. :-) I was PMSL!
The My Fast TV ad that has the guy wanting to go to the store by himself instead of taking his girlfriend because his My Fast wants to drive light should really have him talking to the VW engineers. 3300 lbs?!?!?
"My Fast needs to start on Atkins. OMMmmmmm"

The "FAST" tv spots are great...but I'm not so hot on the print ads shown above.
On the whole, it's a welcome kick in the pants to the brand, and the GTI update is a welcome improvement to a model that was sorely in need of some upgrade love. I still prefer the Mini to the GTI, but it's a step in the right direction for VW.
Now, if only they'd bring back a redesigned Karmann Ghia. :impatient
