in a hurry to get to work?

I think it looks pretty cool. it can out accelerate and out handle
most cars out on the road...enough fast for a little beast.

Hey 'Camaro,

Here's a cheaper, prettier (subjective I know), more practical ( ), yet still comparable British alternative to your GTR... PLUS, the gauges are in da MIDDLE! So, during the 8+ seconds it takes you to get to 100, you can almost imagine you're in a MINI.

I'll never get this car for xmas, so no point in being a good boy all year for nuthin, right?

Mine, too...but have you priced insurance for them???

Worse than an M Roadster....

I am glad I didn't buy one, now. Insurance and gas will eat you up!

If I needed a non-convertible (since I already have the perfect convertible), I would check into the VW TDI ?Golf? or whatever they are calling them now. Or maybe a WRX

The Ultima got my attention some time ago for sure... However, being in CA, with registration and smog, I would dred the process, and fear the worst case scenario of completing such a machine, but being unable to make it legal for the streets...

At least with the Caterham 7 (or any other Lotus 7 replica), it get's registered as a 1960's something (CA smog exempt), and is relatively pain-less, as explained to me from the owner's I've encountered.

Three years ago it held that 0-100-0 tile, and from my understanding, it has improved upon that since as that was done with the Rover 1.8, and now the 2.3 Duratec is being utilized (the Cosworth version gets 260bhp).

http://www.r500.com/R500main.htm

At 1,000 pounds lighter than the Ultima, it doesn't need the V8, as a 4-banger will do. With that, insurance is very reasonable, and gas mileage is exceptional - the same or better than our MINIs.

I concluded during my research, that for top-end speed, the Ultima was much more aerodynamic, while the Caterham is more of a brick in that regard. But, the Caterham seems to be more well-conceived in the handling department, and with that, can get around most tracks quicker...

I like them both, no doubt, and I were not in CA, it would be a tough decision on whether to create an Ultima CanAM, or the Cat7...

What a nice dilemma to have though, right? (Ahhh the sacrifices people make to live on the sunny, beautiful left coast).

Cheers,

Indeed... not complaining at all... Both are made abroad though (UK), and it would be nice if there were more such options here - to avoid the exchange rate mugging

Thanks 71camaro. I'd very much want to see at least one or two here in CA, and ideally chat with the owners to hear how they got their Ultima on the street...

If there is any info out there on how the Ultima has performed in competition, or comparative track times, please direct me to such a link or source. Thank you for the invite to email you for more information. Much appreciated...

Thanks for the links... exactly what I wanted! The research will now begin

Oh, if you scroll down in your reply, look for "Manage Attachments." There, you can upload photos, like from your desktop. Or, if the photo is already on the web, right click on it to copy, and simply right click and paste it into your reply. I've used both, and they work. Good luck with it, and thanks again!

Ever wonder why Japanese automakers sell us boring/bland cookie cutter cars (Camry, Accord, etc) that are about as exciting as a toaster oven and keep the good stuff like the Skyline and this little beast over there?

Keep selling Camrys with slushboxes in 14 different shades of beige and BMW won't have to worry about a thing....

I was reading about that car a few months ago... I think it's called a "Micra," or something like that... Indeed, they (Japan) gives us the scraps, and not only with regards to autos, but also electronics. It's been that way for a quite a while...

I just wish the US would produce something worthy of serious attention. The world generally makes fun of our efforts, as I understand it, and I certainly see why...

I read an article quite a few years ago, like amost 20 years ago, which said that we were/are not taking auto manufacturing as seriously as other nations. It was emphasized that our best and brightest minds are going into high tech first, then into areospace/defense, and 3rd or 4th (heck, maybe lower), the auto industry. This was in contrast to other nations...

Oh well...

Lotus Elise or a modified Miata ( I still miss my Miata but the MINI is more fun) The euro Ford Focus RS with it's AWD and Turbo would be awfully fun too, if you could get one across the pond.

Some interesting items to ponder...

Graig Barrett of Intel pointed out something worth thinking about.... ten years of bachelors degree production in the parts of the world that are new to open markets will add 300 million degreed workers to the global economy... Outside the US. This is larger than the ENTIRE US population. While our government is busy screwing with a family in Florida, fighting ever CAFE standard increase and the like, GM is buying hybrid drivetrains from Toyota because they can't make them too well themselves, and the US car companies are happy making $ on SUVs and pickups because the sedans are pretty poor. And the Japanese pickups are getting better and better, and the foreign SUVs are better and better (not hard, if the competition is an Escalade!). So other than old cars (see my sig), I'm not seeing too much good from the US. And this ties into this thread because it supports the notion that whatever one would get instead of a Mini, it probably won't be American!

Wow, Matt, that is very insightful information! That is a new perspective for me, and it really makes a lot of sense, unfortunately . Once we lose the large pick-up mkt, there won't be much to hold-on to in the way of automotive pride... Fuel cells, hybrids... times are a changin'! Enjoy your Easter everyone.
