I have no problem with someone rolling through a stop sign, I do it all the time. It is against the law though. I'm such a renegade

I have been called to task by JCampos who apparently owns this board for my comments on breaking the law and then denigrating the officer who does the right thing about it.
I stand by every word I said.
Obviously this forum supports this kind of behavior and I do not.
I will therefore remove myself from it.

I don't think anyone was flaming and I don't think anyone was telling anyone else that they can't drive. I think the vast majority of the opinions expressed were along the lines of; "You broke the law. Yes, it sucks that you got caught, but then again; you broke the law."
To clarify: the oiker threatening was completely uncalled for and absolutely something to ***** about. Rolling through a stop sign and getting a ticket, however, isn't anything that's really defensible.

As I understand it, the person said they stopped. There was no line, so there was no official stop point (which would have been helpful), so one can't say that they stopped at the wrong point. All that was important was that they stopped.
I think the whole point of this sort of thing, is that there are areas on our public roads where things are not marked well, or the speed limit is too low for the traffic flow, or...whatever, and our local police departments take advantage of that when it is convenient for them to do so. If they know an area is a problem, why don't they use the influence of their positions in public safety to correct the problem? It seems to me that they'd rather enjoy the convenience of a great spot to ticket folks, instead of doing the right thing.
So, please, don't give us this garbage about our breaking the law and we should just shut up and pay. There are hundreds of thousands of laws on the books. So many laws, that we are all very likely law breakers, and should all pay. Or should we? When there are so many laws (many of them not good, as even all of you must agree to some extent), that we all can't help but be criminals (in some way or another), then I think there is a serious problem with our society. There are so many laws out there, that we are ALL very much at the whim of the authorities that enforce this stuff, and I have a problem with that.
There have been speed traps, off and on, for DECADES on the street I was ticketed on. It has not slowed people down appreciably over the years. It is a major four lane street, which just happens to be the only practical way to get from one particular section of the city to the other, without going 20 minutes out of your way. But, despite that, it has been a 25 MPH zone after all these years. It is now an even busier street (during rush hour), as this city has grown quite a bit, but there is still no reasonably quick way around through that area. Traffic on this street MOVES, and I just happen to have to use it muliple times a day to get my job done. People are often passing me on this road, because I try to take it easy on this street for obvious reasons. Nonetheless, I can't go as slow as 25 MPH on it most of the time (during rush hour), as that would create a greater danger on this busy street than just the risk of being ticketed. Of course, whenever a speed trap appears on this spot, it's always during rush hour.
Every once and awhile, the speed traps go up, the police get their quotas filled, and then they move on. Sometimes, they get particularly aggressive about the ticketing (depending on the officer involved), and then move on. When they aren't ticketing folks on this street, the cops are going as fast as everyone else when they cruise down this street. They themselves can't even go 25 MPH, or even 30 MPH, on this street, even when it's NOT rush hour. So, does it really bug me when they pull this BS? Yeah, you bet it does! Do I feel like a crook? Heck no! Do I feel like I've been bad, and need my wrist slapped? Heck no! Am I an unsafe driver? Hmmm...no accidents in over 20 years of driving for a living, so...heck no!
I feel like a victim. And feeling victimized by my local police (those wonderful protect and serve folks) makes me angry. I've known many cops, unfortunately, and while wish I could say I think they are all fine, upstanding folks doing a difficult job the best they can, I'm afraid I can't. Because, most of these guys are not all that fine and upstanding, and are in fact...a word I don't wish to use here. I don't know if most police officers start off that way, but most seem to end up that way. One could say it's due to the difficulties of the work they do, but...I've known a few officers that ARE good guys, and don't seem to be deformed by the line of work they do. So...heck, I don't know. I think this sort of thing, speed traps and such, has more to do with goings on at the top of the police department hierarchy food chain, rather than anything to do with street cops wanting to go out of their way to hassle folks. Of course, I could be wrong about that.
Like I said though, in my initial thread on this subject, many other posters will just assume we were guilty, and guilty in a big way, just because we were ticketed, and will simply say, "Just pay the ticket, and stop complaining, you crazy lead footed drivers!" Oh well, that's just how some people are. The rest of us regular humans just have to learn to ignore such types as best we can.
Whatever. The origional poster wanted to know if there was anything at all they could do about fighting this ticket. I wish I could advise them in some useful way, but I can't. So, instead, I told my own little story of ticketing woe, so that they would not feel so alone in this sort of thing. When I read THEIR post, it made ME feel a little less alone in my frustration, and I just wanted to help 'em out in whatever little way I could, because I understand where they are coming from. I figured a few other folks would tell their stories, and...just possibly...someone MIGHT have a word or two of USEFUL advice.
Well, we've gotten a little bit of useful advice, from some of you, and I want to say how much I appreciate it. Others of you have sympathized, and I appreciate that as well. And some others...well, better left unsaid on my part, eh?
Please be safe everyone, and good luck with the cops out there!
Oh, and...um...anymore useful info would be even more highly appreciated! (And as to the flaming...? Whatever. Flame away folks. That's part of the...er..."fun" of a public forum. Freedom of speech, gotta love it, eh?)

Ill ignore the flamers because they are absolutely useless, but thanks to the others who have tried to help. Again, if you want to learn more about trying to get out of rediculous tickets like this visit

So when exactly were you 5 ft behind the car in front of you? While he was in the intersection or before he entered the intersection? Was it a four way stop?
A little "speculation" by me, don't take this the wrong way, just trying to picture what actually happened. And yes, I know the cop didn't "see" you, he just heard you, which I do think is BS on the LEO's part.
If that car was 190" long (typical family car) and he was at his slowest point (.05-1.5mph, the speed I roll through intersections at) right before the intersection - 1ft- then his rear bumper would be 17ft behind the intersection. If you stopped 5 ft. behind him then you were 22ft. behind the intersection. Figure another 3ft. from the distance of your bumper to yourself, then that's 25 ft behind the intersection. Thats quite a distance to be able to see if any vehicles are coming. Good luck with your ticket:smile:

The stop was on a slight right turn. THe guy in front of me didnt EVEN slow to 1 MPH, he just rolled on through it at im guessing 5mph. I stopped when he was at that point. The road was on a steep downhill slope, so there is plenty of time to see if other vehicles are coming, which is probably why the guy in front of me figured he should just go, and why the other 10 vehicles figured they could as well. I stopped enough to slightly roll backward when my foot was off the brake. Its hard to draw the picture, but the stop was on a very slight rounding right turn, and I stopped at the peak of the turn.... again, its hard to explain.... I had a complete view of the road for at LEAST 20 seconds coming down the hill and again while I was stopped. I was driving perfectly safe which is why I am so irritated by this ticket! If I thought I ran this stop sign, I WOULDNT BE HERE BITCHING ABOUT IT!
There are books on how to fight traffic tickets. However YMMV. One point in your favor, if the cop who wrote your ticket was already writing another ticket when you 'ran the stop' how was he able to watch you do it?
My understanding is that in california the officer that writes the ticket has to directly observe the violation. Anything else is hearsay and can be used as a defense. It will cost you at least a day off of work to fight it but I would simply for the principle of the matter. However if the court normally favors the cops prepare to lose.

Do you know the MVC section that cites this?
I now have $230 in speeding tickets (2), and I've not even gotten my MINI yet!
