rear fogs......why?

why must people drive around with their rear fog lights on when it's not foggy?
it's most annoying

cuz they are silly and probably think it is cool, though a more mundane utilitarian feature cannot be found anywhere........

also, some kars have them rigged to go on with the front fogs
so i'm willing to bet that there is people driving around not knowing their rear fogs are on
but i've seen a "04"MCS running around town with them on & we know their on a seperate switch

I see this most commonly with Audi owners.

My take on it is that rear fog light knowledge in the States is very low to the point that having rear fog lights is a novelty feature that only real car fanatics have (1) heard about (2) may know how to use. People that actually spend the time to read the manual may also fall into that category. Regardless, it's not a "common knowledge" item.

Having lived in Europe's foggiest place (Vlanderen / Flanders near the North Sea in Belgium) and having experienced first-hand some of the horrific accidents that occur when a fog bank rolls ashore, I got the rear fogs for my MINI as a safety precaution for foggy or other limited visability conditions (snow storms, heavy rains). I've used them occasionally and only during periods of potentially dangerous conditions. I find that they are very useful in letting drivers following my car know precisely where I am, so that they can maintain a safe distance behind me. Rear fogs should never be used in good weather, as they are bright enough to cause the driver following behind to lose some night vision because of their output. Think of them more as driving lights for the rear, rather than fogs.
