Well, I drove an e63 M6 today...
So I saw an M6 parked outside a little dealership right along Bolsa in Midway City this morning. For $22k, I thought why not go check it out?
The boring black interior and silver/blue Camry exterior weren't doing much for me, to be honest. But I knew I was in something special when I started the engine, and I heard that V10 rumbling to life. Taking off was a little awkward with the slow and jerky SMG gearbox, and I couldn't figure out for the life of me how to adjust the settings. The salesman wasn't exactly Mr. Personality, so I didn't bother asking him. I've seen enough episodes of Top Gear to get 'er done and just press the "M" button on the steering wheel
The car felt nice and solid, steering weight was very similar to my R56 MCS when not in Sport Mode, and the ride was surprisingly comfortable. The sound when I first downshifted (my first downshift in an M6!) made my skin crawl.
After turning right down the next road, I buried my foot. And to my surprise, nothing
The engine sounded AMAZING, still much quieter than I had expected with the windows down, but it felt like I had absolutely no low-end power, a bit of a disappointment. I wouldn't say it was slow, because that would just be stupid, but it didn't feel like the rip-your-face-off acceleration I was expecting. Even looking at the speedo, I was definitely going fast (errr...90-ish). I just never felt it
Does anyone else know what I'm talking about?
That being said, the engine note alone was enough to reel me in during the very short test drive that I took. The M6 is not for me, as an M5 would be far more practical (space in the back of the M6 was about on par with the MINI) and I would definitely consider a used M5 in the future as a daily driver.
