This isn't an offer from FORD, just a sales tactic by one dealership in North Carolina.

NBC17 news (RALEIGH, N.C.)

But what if you could get free gas? At one car dealership in Fuquay-Varina, all you have to do is buy a new ride.

"Today we started two years of free gas on all Ford Expeditions in stock," said Bob Jenkins, president of Don Jenkins Carolina Ford.

Jenkins said free gas is a great way to get potential car buyers on his lot. With every new car sold, the owner gets six months of free gas. The free gas offer was increased to two years for the Expedition to help with gas-guzzling SUV fears.

"We feel we have to do something extra special to get people to come down to look at them and how economical they are even with the high price of fuel," Jenkins said.

There isn't a bottomless gas pit at the dealership -- the promotion works based on the estimated fuel cost calculated by the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection Agency.

The estimated fuel cost for the Expedition is $1,367 per year. After purchasing the SUV, the buyer gets a check for twice that amount -- $2,734 -- to cover the two years of free gas.

I was looking at the EPA website the other day when I had the clever idea of calculating an alternative efficiency rating. I thought that it would be interesting to calcluate a vehicle's fuel efficiency in terms of MPD (Miles Per Dollar).

I also learned from the EPA that the worst gas guzzling vehicles are not even tested by the EPA!

The EPA does calculate an estimate of annual fuel costs based on $1.40/gallon, 15000 miles, and 55% city driving.

Since gas is not close to $1.40, someone buying that Expedition might not even get reimbursed for a single year at current prices

Here is a little table I made showing Miles Per Dollar calculations for several vehicles at $2, $2.50, and $3 per gallon. Since EPA does not have figures for the H2, I used published results from a road test.

-------------------MPG----MPD($2)----MPD($2.5)----MPD($3)
Prius..................60..........30.0........... ..24.0.............20
MINI Cooper.......28..........14.0.............11.2.... .........9.3
MINI Cooper S....25..........12.5.............10.0............ .8.3
Hummer H2........10...........5.0...............4.0...... .......3.3

Realistically, from what I've read and an ownership account from a friend- the Prius averages more around 50MPG w/ about a 50% mix of city & highway driving...

Best MPD- VW Golf TDI  As diesel fuel costs less...

Diesel fuel costs more in Southern California than premium.
