2005 VW Golf vs. 2005 Mini Cooper...
Having grown up with Fiats and then attempted to own US built cars from the Mid seventies to the mid eighties I find it amusing when people discuss reliability. I have had exactly five or six vehicle malfunctions in the hundreds of thousands of miles I have driven since 1990....in that time I have driven a US Mazda built Ford Probe (3 faults), A Volvo 960 (no fault), a Vauxhall Cavalier (GM Europe) (one fault), a Vauxhall Frontera (Honda Passport here)(no fault), a Mercury Grand Marquis (no fault), a Suburban (one fault), a Suburban 4X4(no fault) a Ford Crown Vic (no fault),
An Audi A4 Q (two faults), a Ford F-350 (one fault, my fault), latest two acquisitions (MINI and Allroad so far so good....not a peep.

think the new MKV Golf looks absolutely beautiful. don't think i'll be trading in but if situation arises Golf is definitely on the short list. This is what the Honda Civic Si should have looked like from the beginning.
>>In my next car, I'm looking for something a little more reliable than a VW or a MINI. I've grown tired of seeing the service department.

I think the new MKV Golf looks ugly and has a tall Minivan look to it.
Believe it or not, the MKV Golf has been a major sales flop in Europe so far....they are giving them away at discount.
VW is clearly imitating the better looks of the quite successful Peugeot 307 hatchback.

For reliable I'd think about a Honda, they seem to score consistently well in survey's of reliability.
Toyota seems to have slipped lately, wonder why? They used to tops in quality. Lexus is high up there in quality ratings.
I'm gonna "Wait and see" how the MCS works out, so far so good. But then again, I'm only coming up on 1,000MI

We will get the GTI first before the the 4 door Golf. And since it's coming in 06, it may actually receive a few freshening before it hits our shore. The MKV design is growing on me. The exterior looks like my old 92 Civic Si though
The interior is is better than the MINI that's for sure. Then again to each his own.

Hondas are racking up lots of complaints as of late. Go to http://www.edmunds.com/townhall and read all the horror stories about Honda "Quality". Weak areas in these cars appear to be the durability of their automatic transmissions, extremely weak and soft factory paint jobs, thin sheetmetal and aweful brake systems.
Add to that the typically arrogant Honda dealers with thier "No can do wrong attitude".
Take it from me, I have owned 8 Honda/Acura products in 12 years (Over $140,000 worth of vehicles) and they break like any other freaking new car in the market. They live off (like Toyota) on thier past laurels.
Truth is all automakers in the world today have to cut R&D and manufacturing costs to remain competitive, hence the epidemic of component reliability of new cars today, regardless of manufacturer and point of origin.
Think about it, all manufacturers stick their hands in the same exact parts supply bin!
