Speeding ticket in VA- any way to avoid points?

Sorry if this is off limits in the rules, but I don't intend on this being a discussion of anything illegal.

The quick and dirty is that I got a speeding ticket in VA on Route 13 in the peninsula, and I got nabbed in a speed trap because the speed limit on that road drops every mile or so (or at least seems like that. )

One time, I did have a ticket knocked down to a lesser charge so that they still convicted me of a moving violation, but that there were no points on my lisence. That's what I'd ideally like to do as I really don't want to lose my safe driving discounts on my insurance.

My lisence is from CT. Does anyone know if there is anything I can do over the phone with the court in VA as some sort of plea bargain to get this knocked down a bit?

Thanks.

In the past I attended driving school and maintained my insurance discounts. The driving school was like 150.00 but in the long run saved me money.

You might find answers at the National Motorists Association website.

Did you get any lawyer letters offering to handle it for you?

As of a couple weeks ago, I was a VA resident. Since you're a CT resident, do you think it might be up to your state as to whether or not you get points? A VA safe driving class may do you no good.

For VA residents, we can attend a safe driving class (of which I've been to a couple!) for 5 points. I have no idea what CT does, but in VA you start with a zero points balance and you can take the class to bring you up to +5 points. A negative points balance in VA is bad. Unfortunately I'm speaking from experience. I believe my safe driver class was $60.

I actually got the exact opposite. I'm from CT, but live in VA and I was up there visiting once a couple years ago and got a speeding ticket in CT. I've had my share of speeding tickets in the past, but have had them reduced from whatever they were to 9 MPH over and they do not reflect points... at least they never have for me.

I called a ton of people in CT to try and find out if there was something I could do, but they kept telling me the only way I could request the charge be reduced or to fight the charge, was to go to court, or have a lawyer present to represent me in court.

I didn't go to court, because it's a long drive and I didn't have the vacation time and I didn't feel like getting a lawyer for it so I took the hit on my license. Bottom line, I don't think you will be able to do much without representation in court.

Send the ticket in pleading not guilty with a letter. In your letter ask for when the radar gun was calibrated and when the officer was last certified. They are supposed to be certified and calibrated yearly. Every ticket I have received for speeding I beat by asking for those items. 99% of the time they can not provide it, so the judge throws it out.
