I am not ashamed. It was a 1993 VW Golf. It actually held together pretty well. All my fault though

26 years behind the wheel and only once have I been at fault hitting another car...and even then it was because they stopped dead in front of me in the center lane of a traffic circle, so it was only "technically" my fault. And despite being hit by others several times, I've never totaled anything.

I'm with L.Mini...knock on wood and keep it safe!

(I'm not sure if this discussion is a particularly good idea, especially if one is the least bit supersticious )

My 72 VW Beatle was pretty well smashed up, but I was able to salvage it. Years later, due to someone pulling out in front of my 96 Mustang, it was destroyed, the front half was literally torn off, the airbags blew. Tell you what... the airbags were the scariest part- after they blew, I couldn't hear anything for about a minute... I though that that was it, I was deaf.

Fortunately - none. Knock on wood
But back in 1992-1993 during a 16 month period, I was rear-ended 4 times. The drivers all took responsibility. The first three were with my 1985 Honda Accord. Then the 4th time was on my 4 month old 1993 Acura Integra.

I am glad to say I never totaled a car, banged up a few maybe. My first accident was with my first car (Datsun 510), it was late and snowing. I got it sideways and wasn't able to straighten it out. I hit a parked VW. Man was I bummed. The next accident was in another Datsun 510, also in the winter. I had some friends with me and we where on our way to a party when a friend shouted quick make a left here. I cut the wheel hard and got it side ways, hit a snow bank that was hard as ice which caused the car to roll. We all got out of the car and flipped it back over starterd it up and went to the party. Knowbody was hurt. The car was pretty banged up. Wasn't high school great

Each of my three sons and my daughter totaled their cars, a mustang, a convertible VW, a TR 4 and a Pontiac. Finally, this year in her 99 Chrysler LHS, my wife skidded along a concrete berm, knocked a telegraph pole out of the ground, went across a 10' ditch, through a chain link fence and ended up in the middle of a field. The airbag didn't deploy. My wife had not a scratch or any problems whatsoever. I thought I might get $14 or $15 thousand, but they paid out $19500 and with that I bought the MINI. (I did add a couple of thou".)

The 1st car I totaled was a 1973 Ford Cortina 2 litre. Great car. Some kid who got his lisence the day before came through a Give Way (Yield to Americans) sign in front of me in a 1973 Ford Falcon. Big tank of a car. Well, I was doing about 80kph and t-boned him. Totaled both cars. The only panel on my car that wan't bent by the impact was the boot lid. The bonnet was bent in half. Pretty impressive for a '73, when they still made cars out of steel.

I was in shock and banged up a little, but walked away with nothing but some scrapes and bruises.

I can kill two stones with one post. My first car was a Fiat 850 coupe and the first car I totaled. Actually someone did it for me. They ran a red light and hit me.

Is this really a serious topic? The way it's worded (what was the FIRST car you totaled), I'm a little scared!

Other than a bunch of idiots hitting me and doing minor damage, I'd done well. Then the "car from nowhere" appeared durring a left hand turn. I was doing 10 mph and the other driver hit me, offsett frontal impact, doing about 45 mph ... in a 25 mph zone mind you. I was turning before a blind corner that I could not see beyond. My poor 2001 Miata was lost. Both airbags blew and the front end got way crunched and pushed around. Serious frame damage. I walked away shaken, but the driver of the other car was taken by ambulance complaining of back/neck pain.

Continued from the Off-topic "What was your first car"....

While driving the freshly painted, finally finished 1963 850 Mini with an MG 1100 engine, just hours after bringing it home, the brakes went, catastrophically. We plowed into a HUGE Ford sation wagon, broadside in an intersection, after avoiding one car, at least. My brother and I escaped unscathed, altho the Mini was written off. The line that burst looked like it was sliced clean, but a cop friend who was an accident specialist said he'd seen many like it. The parts lived on in various other Minis I've owned over the years, and I still have bits around in the spares boxes.
She was a fine steed, but her candle flickered only briefly. Sniff.

I've never totalled my own car, but a few winters ago when I still had my '98 Jeep TJ, it, well, it needed new tires REALLY bad (hence the reason I now boycott Goodyear... got 15,000 on tires that should have lasted 50,000... never buy Goodyear!), and I was doing everything I could to stay on the road, the worst driving conditions I had ever seen... ice covered with slush covered with ice covered with slushy snow. I was doing 15mph in 4wd, went around a corner and the Jeep kept going straight. I drove up on TOP of a late model Olds Cutlass, burst its radiator, smashed the front end down pretty good. They moron kept his engine running! Told him to shut it off and I backed off. I only had light fender damage to my car, and my left front control arm got slightly bent. Otherwise, with the Jeep before that, when I was 16 or so, I had a tailgator that I was messing with, then he passed me, I sped up while doing so, he snapped in front of me, about 10 feet from my bumper and slammed on his brakes (mind you he has his wife and infant in his car). The Jeep had bad brakes, so naturally I smashed hinto him. Didn't hurt his car at all, just triggered his gas shutoff, smashed in my fenders (recurring theme, lol). And then on my first car, a 1929 Model A, well, it was in bad shape, so I didn't really care. I couldn't drive it on the road, and I was 15, so I'd take it behind our shop, accidentally cutting corners too sharp and hitting walls... or turning really fast and putting it on 2 wheels. Maybe I'm too hard on my cars, but I'm better now... honestly...

11 months after paying off my first ever new car - A 1986 Nissan 200SX - it was a hit by a crane (not the bird - the big yellow mechanical kind) while parked. The crane was being moved to a new construction site on a flatbed when something came loose, swung out and ripped a 6" gouge from taillite to headlight twisting the door off and causing the roof to crumple. It was parked between a '91 Benz and a '90 Corvette neither of which were touched. By the way, it had Goodyear Eagle GT's on it at the time with about 35k miles on them and they were still in great shape. The Bridgestones it came with lasted 12K miles and I got about 10k out of Pirellis and Yokohamas. My next vehicle was a '92 Wrangler which had Goodyears on it that lasted 55K so I replaced them with Goodyears. My next and last vehicle before Mini came with Firestones but Ford replaced them with Goodyears. Does Goodyear make a nice 17" Run-Flat?

Totaled a perfect 2 year old 1987 Mustang GT. Hit a utility pole at 50 to 60 mph after being forced off the road. End result - Mustang destroyed in spectacular fashion, utility pole in 3 pieces, me - broken collar bone from seat belt.
What can we learn from all this:
1. The seat belt saved my life.
2. The heavy crap in my trunk nearly killed me.

If you haul heavy stuff in your trunk, fasten it down or you may end up wearing it.

Boy I hated to lose that Mini. The 1100 lump still lives, tho. I even had quite bit of seat time in my buddy's MG1100. It was just about the size of a new MINI, ya know. The Austin Ameica was a better car, but the only one I ever got was used for the various engine bits. It actually ran and stopped, but was heavily impacted on one side, so it was un-restorable at that time.

The first and only car I totaled was my wife's 2002 Suzuki Esteem. Was not my fault, some old guy was crossing from one parking lot to the next and took out my front end. No injuries. But the good news is I needed an new car and found my Bumble on a used car lot in our price range.
