I gotta give my votes for Christine and Bullitt. Who doesn't want a car that can fix itself. Loved the Challenger in it too, which is why Bullitt gets a vote. Love SF and loved the chase scene!!
But...nobody's mentioned the Batman movies!! I loved the one Michael Keaton drove, makes me weak in the knees!! The TV version was cool too, if not a bit cheesy.

Oh hell yeah! There was an American movie called Running on Empty but this Australian one is one of the best kar movies ever! Blown 57 Chev running flat out through the outback at night with no lights on cause the driver is blind... an HG Monaro changing into an HT in mid-air just before it explodes...AWESOME movie. Wish I could find it here.
[edited] This post made me do a search online for the movie, apparently it's also known in the US as "Fast Lane Fever".

Wow what a good list - we should make this a poll! Everything mentioned here I'd watch, and if you haven't seen some of the more esoteric titles mentioned like Duel (by Spielberg!), Faster Pussycat Kill! Kill!, or Death Race 2000 (with Stallone, David Carridine, and Gopher from Love Boat), you gotta see em!
My two favorite car movies are the original Dawn of the Dead (just for the scene where they tool around the mall it a VW Scirocco with the hatch up shooting zombies), and The Road Warrior.

I didnt like the original Italian Job to much, because so many of the good cars get destroyed. The new one is okay, I like Bullit a lot, especially because one friend has a 68 Mustang GT500, and another is restoring a Charger. But for right now I have to go with C'etait de rendezvous-The real thing, all in one take.

or any info on getting this movie formatted for the USA?
The response I got from those guys was:
Hello Andrew
Thanks for your e-mail.
Unfortunately the DVD is region 4 (our part of the world) and in PAL
format, so unless you have a multi-region & multi-format DVD player &
TV, you won't have much joy with this DVD...
In the USA you are Region 1 and NTSC TV format. Here in Australia
multi-region and multi-format TVs and players are very common, but not
so much in your part of the world I gather. Some of our customers do
have them, but I understand that they are hard to find. Some also play
the DVDs on laptops which have suitable software, but I don't know
enough about that to be able to comment on it.
Check your system and if you can accept multiple regions & formats then
it should be find, otherwise you will have some trouble trying to view
it. Postage of DVDs is quite cheap as the weight is low. It should be
between $7 & $8 Australian for airmail.
I hope this helps

One of my favorite is from 1989
Catch Me If You Can
The local highschool is threatened to be closed, unless they collect $200,000. The students' president Melissa struggles to collect the money, but lacks the support from her fellow students. So she accepts when car fetishist Dylan suggests to bet on him in car races against underworld king Phatman. At first everything goes well - too well ...
Nice cars fairly good plot.
This is knda hard to find though.
Cheers

I can't believe so many people liked "Two Lane Blacktop" !!!! I got so bored watching that movie, mostly because nobody ever says anything, nobody tries to accomplish anything, and everyone in it is next to useless. Just not my kind of flick, I guess

Also, I was surprised how many people liked the new Italian Job. It felt like the studios took a great movie and put it through the hollywood meat grinder - POP - out comes a Marky Mark flick.

The original is still one of my all time favorite movies (not just for the chase scenes - also for Michael Caine's Prison Release Present
). It's pure ridiculousness bottled up and condensed into 2 hours of 70's fluff.I know they're not chase scenes- but two truly intense car "moments" are in The Forgotten and Collateral. I recommend you see both  There's a cool chase scene in one of the Indiana Jones's, too. I think it's at the beginning of Temple of Doom.
Goldeneye for it's Tank vs. Russian POS sedan
And if you've got the sense of humor to laugh at a movie that takes itself WAY too seriously and doesn't pull off ANY of the dialogue, RENT TORQUE!!! Right now it's my #2 movie of all time for being the most awesomely bad movie *ever*. The opening scene is a motorcycle blowing the doors off two rice rockets at like 160 MPH

My favorite Car films;
