Southern California authorities crack down on illegal hot rods, street racing
Looks like you guys in the heart of the western car culture better watch it! Seems overkill to me, but let's see if it works. What a waste though, but that seems to be the nature of government. I would think auctioning off the wheels at least and contributing to whatever memorial fund set up for victims of street racing would be more humane.

Street racing is silly. Sounds like they got what they deserved.
One, no actually three, less ricers on the road for me to laugh at
.
this is dumb, impound the car, and sell it at auction, this is wasteful overkill, if you want, make it so that the original owner cannot buy back their car to be sure, but crushing them is dumb, there is a lot of $ being wasted by this policy
for reference, I DO agree that street racing is dumb, but two dumbs don't make a smart. . .

I feel strongly about this topic. I wholeheartedly support this. Make them watch their precious street racing cars get crushed. Let them feel the pain. Let them mourn their "loss". Give them a little time without wheels to contemplate their stupidity. It may extend their life a bit ~ and quite possibly mine too.
A car that's built to street race isn't necessarily going to be bought at auction by a nice family with a white picket fence. It will somehow fall into the hands of yet another street racer. Crush them I say, crush them all!
I live on a canyon road. It's popular with these little punks. On multiple occassions, these street racing fools have raced down our canyon road, missed a tight twisty, taken their car(s) over the edge...and I get to see their family mourn their death by constantly keeping a cross, memorial, pictures, candles, etc at scene.
Street racing is beyond stupid. I don't appreciate the fact that they take my, and my family's, lives in their hands. We have to drive that same canyon road to get home every day/night.
These "kids" think they are immortal. They have no concept of "cause and effect" or "actions and consequences".
Want to mod your car? Terrific! Please do. I do. Want to race it? Awesome! Please do. But take it to the proper venue...not on my residential street!

if you auction off the car or the parts it just puts the disease back into
circulation. it is best that those cars are recycled into aluminum cans or
coins or another car or watever they become which is useful for everyone.
the worst place to be is behind a geezer driving under the speed limit,
and a Evo8 or STi with a teen driver trying to pass you from behind.
it feels like a death trap.
geezer cars driving dangerously under the speed limit should also be crushed.

Track days are a great way to get the "fix" and keep it off the streets. Get involved. Join the SCCA and work the corners if you can't drive; it's just as rewarding and a ton of fun. Most importantly, it keeps it off the streets and saves lives (maybe your own).
I just love this quote
I am hard on my cars, but never in the past 25 years has a VIN number 'fallen off'.
The 18-year-old mechanic said a vehicle identification sticker apparently fell off and without it, police suspected some of the parts were stolen.

I highly doubt most street racers are going to feel pain or mourn for their cars. They will more likely get very pissed and do it all over again, just with a chip on their shoulder. I don't support street racing and will never do it myself but I know the type of person who would.
Charles Hoang winced when the whoosh went out of the tires. Daniel Maldonado took pictures with a digital camera as glass exploded and rained down to the ground.
The cars the teens had so meticulously souped up and tricked out were crushed Wednesday as part of a crackdown on illegal street racing in Southern California.
"That's my heart, my dream," said Hoang, 18, of Chino, who was surrounded by friends as his 1998 Acura Integra was put into a compactor. "That's my girlfriend, the love of my life. The cops can crush my car, but they can't crush my memories."
mmmm... rice cakes...
A shame really. As much as I like cars, like seeing people mod their cars and give 'em a good run, street racing is plain stupid. These kids are not finding an empty country road to stretch their legs on, they race on crowded streets with lots of spectators (willing or not) and the potential for serious disaster. The six pancakes should be put on display at the most popular 'venues' for street racing to drive the point home.

I have never seen more bad drivers than in crowded cities like LA... if the USA would spend more time getting rid of 90% of its drivers maybe speeders/racers wouldn't be the issue... on the autobahn people know stay right.... this is something no where in the US I have seen understood
it's far too easy to get a licence here... and far too cheap... with proper schooling and testing required it would save lives...

Sell 'em as scrap.
Works for me. Only worry is that most of these kids are also thieves. They all say they put 10000 dollars into there cars but it turns out the parts are stolen. So it's easy for a person like that to replace what he lost, just at someone elses expense. They should be keeping an eye on anyone whose car they crush.
Could be anything. A drag race, or something with corners. Whatever two lames agree to do.
It's not just geezers. I'll settle for anyone with a cell phone glued to the side of their head, and enter the freeway at 40 mph.
