Cool story about a neglected Bugatti...

don't know if this is the right forum to post this, but this story is pretty interesting:

http://www.nytimes.com/2007/05/27/au...es/27BARN.html

turns out this car was owned by John Straus, grandson of Isador (of Macy's fame), who parked it in his garage in Greenwich, CT, in 1962, where it has been ever since.

is expected to fetch $300-400,000 at auction.

Hmm, I bet the odds are high that Jay Leno will be bidding on that. I know I would if I could afford something like that.

I love/hate these barn find stories.

What a beauty! Just needs a little detailing, but someone will over-restore it. Check out the XKE (despite ugly headlights).

An article said it cost $8,300 in the 30s.
I predict it will go for over $500,000.

$400,000 for a near perfect 1938 Bugatti, that probably won't even be a respectable first bid. Think I'd be surprised at anything under a mill in todays superheat market. Just my two cents worth.

My thought also because Bugatti's have been selling at auction for millions the last 30 years.

I think someone is going to need OctaneGuy's advice. Might as well give Alex at Tire Rack a call too. . .

Update:

According to the August issue of Automobile magazine, the 1938 Bugatti 57C Atalante S/N 57766 was auctioned last month in “as is” condition! The chassis had a different body when originally sold new. Its description was “this is what a car would look like if stored in a garage without climate control and windows rolled down for forty years”!

The condition did not detour bidders both present and on the phone with the selling price of $852,500 when the hammer fell.

BTW the XKE sold for $3850 at the same action and was described as a parts only type car.

I'm a little slow today (it's Monday after all) was the auction of the Bugatti and E type pictured?

If so did it mention who the winning bidder was- I know Ralph Lauren has a passion for type 57's
